- Moscow--Metropolitan Nikolai of Krutitsky and Kolomna, second-ranking official of the Moscow patriarchate, greets Dr. Eugene Carson Blake of Philadelphia, president of the National Council of Churches, on the arrival here of nine American church officials for a ten-day visit. Dr. Blake is head of the delegation. The trip was sponsored by the National Council at the invitation of patriarch Alexei of Moscow, head of the Russian Orthodox Church. The American visit will be returned in June by a Russian Orthodox group. While in Moscow, the churchmen will confer and seek to establish continuing with Christian leaders of the Soviet Union. St. Joseph's Cathedral here looks like a hollow shell after an early morning fire destroyed the 64-year-old mother church of the Hartford Archdiocese. The blaze, which started in the basement below the altar, was discovered during the 7 a.m. mass. More than 135 firemen battled the flames for five hours in 16-degree temperature. Damage was estimated at $5,000,000. A few hours earlier, a midnight blaze destroyed another Catholic church -- St. Patrick's in the city's business area. - Text transcribed from caption: #PEP-18688. QUEEN ATTENDS SERVICE IN NIGERIA. LAGOS, NIGERIA -- Queen Elizabeth II leaves the Cathedral Church of Christ here after attending a service of commemoration for members of the Royal West African Frontier Force who died during World War II. With her are the Most Rev. James L. C. Horstead, Anglican Archbishop of West Africa; and his chaplain who is holding the Primatial Cross of the Province of West Africa. The sermon was preached by Dr. A. W. Howells, Bishop of Lagos; and the lesson read by the Duke of Edinburgh, who accompanied his wife on her visit.
