- Text transcribed from caption: #429 METHODIST PASTOR SERVES JEWISH TROOPS First Lieutenant Harmon B. Moore, Army protestant (Methodist) chaplain, delivering the evening sermon for Jewish troops of the U.S. Marine Corps and Army, at their Friday evening joint services held in a jungle chapel at a Southwest Pacific base. Chaplain Moore delivered the sermon in the absence of the chaplain-rabbi, whose circuit covers a half-dozen islands and bases. Chaplain Moore is a qualified parachutist. Prior to entering the service, he held a pastorate at a Methodist church in Childersburg, Ala. Second Lieutenant Julian C. Levinson of Denver, Colo., is at the right. - Text transcribed from caption: #449 CHAPLAIN OF THE NEW “FLAT-TOP” FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT Washington, D.C…Chaplain Robert E. Lee, of the Lido Beach Naval Redistribution Center, has been assigned to duty as chaplain of the new 45, 000 ton aircraft carrier, Franklin D. Roosevelt. The new “flat-top,” christened last spring, will be the peace-time show piece of the American Navy. Prior to his enlistment, Chaplain Lee was chaplain of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and pastor of College Lutheran Church, Blacksburg, Va. He was the first Protestant chaplain at the Attau [sic. - Text transcribed from caption: #43 CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY OF OKINAWA Chaplain Roy N. Hillyer, senior chaplain of the Tenth Army on Okinawa (seated at center of table) with leaders of the Christian community at Shimmabuke, Okinawa [sic. Shimabuku, Okinawa]. The two men at the right of the table were originally converted by a Methodist missionary who spent a short time on the island, thirty years ago, while enroute to Japan. They are Mojon and Shosei Kina, brothers. Seated at the left is Corporal Tom Higa, a native of Shimmabuke [sic. Shimabuku], who had gone to school in Honolulu, and there enlisted in the U.S. Army. Shosei is superintendent of the school system. Both he and his brother have been preaching the Gospel from the Bible in the Japanese language left with them by the missionary, thirty years ago. - Text transcribed from caption: #1002 CATHOLIC EDUCATOR BECOMES FIRST COMMODORE CHAPLAIN WASHINGTON, D.C. -- With his left hand on the Bible he used when a student for the priesthood at the Sulpician Seminary here, Capt. Robert J. White, dean of the School of Law, Catholic University of America, takes the oath which henceforth distinguishes him as the first commodore chaplain in the history of the American Navy. The precedent-setting ceremony took place in the office of Rear Admiral William N. Thomas (left), USN, who administered the oath in the presence of a number of Navy officials, Congressmen and high government officials. Former national chaplain of the American Legion and vice-president, 1934-36, of FIDAC, a world organization of World War I veterans, Father White was nominated for the commission by President Truman. - Text transcribed from caption: #810 BERLIN COUNSELLOR FOR ROMAN CATHOLIC INTEREST Father Peter Buchholz is the Counsellor [sic. Councillor] for Roman Catholic interests and chairman of the Office for Church Affairs of the Berlin city government. For twenty years he was chaplain at the Plotzensee Prison near Berlin. During the Nazi regime he ministered to over 1000 political prisoners who were sentenced to die by hanging. These included Catholics executed for the famous July 20 attempt on Hitler’s life.
