- Dr. Carlton Hayes dies at 82.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31547 DR. CARLTON HAYES DIES AT 82 AFTON, N.Y. -- Dr. Carlton J.H. Hayes, internationally known historian and diplomat who was a co-founder and first Catholic co-chairman of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, died at his hometown of Afton, N.Y., at the age of 82. He served as American Ambassador to Spain during World War II and wrote of his assignment in "Wartime Mission to Spain." The noted layman, a leader in the movement to improve interreligious and integroup [intergroup] relations, played an active role in the NCCJ as co-chairman from 1928 until 1946. In a statement lauding his work, Dr. Lewis Webster Jones, president of the NCCJ, cited Dr. Hayes as one of the early "giants" in the interreligious movement. For about 50 years after the turn of the century, Dr. Hayes was a well-knwon [well-known] figure on the Columbia University campus, where he was first a student -- receiving a Ph.D. in 1909 -- and later an instructor and Seth Low Professor of History, retiring from this post in 1950. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30253 PRAYER FOR A BEREAVED COUNTRY WASHINGTON, D.C. -- To Dr. Frederick Brown Harris, retired Methodist clergyman, fell the task of offering a prayer before the U.S. Senate when news came of the shooting of the late President Kennedy in Dallas. An excerpt from his prayer: “Hold us, we pray, and the people of America, calm and steady and full of faith for the Republic in this tragic hour of our history. God save the state and empower her for whatever awaits for the great world role she has been called to fill in this time of destiny.” Dr. Harris, who said the President’s death marked a “great and tragic loss to the nation,” has been Senate chaplain for 15 years. - Msgr. Ellis resigns Catholic U. post.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30469 MSGR. ELLIS RESIGNS CATHOLIC U. POST WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Msgr. John Tracy Ellis, noted Catholic scholar, resigned as church history professor at the Catholic University of America after 30 years as student and faculty member. He will assume the same teaching post at the University of San Francisco. A teacher at Catholic University, only Pontifical university in this country, for 28 years, Msgr. Ellis had been church history professor there since 1947. He has been on leave from Catholic University for some months and has been residing there. The priest holds worldwide recognition as a church historian and for encouraging Catholics to deepen and broaden their intellectual life. Last year, Msgr. Ellis charged that Catholic University had been undergoing a “type of suppression” for nearly a decade. He made the comment at a time when the names of four noted theologians were withdrawn by university officials from a list of proposed speakers suggested by a student group. - Text transcribed from caption: C-31841 AIDED PETITION DRIVE VATICAN CITY -- Bishop Francis F. Reh, rector of the North American College in Rome, played a leading role in the dramatic final moments of the Second Vatican Council’s third session. Bishop Reh assisted Cardinas Leger, Ritter and Meyer in securing more than 1,000 signatures on a petition calling for a vote on religious liberty. Onetime rector of St. Joseph’s Seminary at Yonkers, N.Y., Bishop Reh headed the Charleston, S.C., See until appointment to the post in Rome. Pope Paul VI ruled that he would not override the decision of the 12-man Council presidency which deferred voting on religious liberty until the fourth session. At top left is Don Demeter, slugging outfielder of the Detroit Tigers. Others are Dave Wickersham, the Tigers’ 19-game winning pitcher, left, and Vernon Law, Pittsburgh Pirates hurler, right in second row; and below right is Branch Rickey, venerable and controversial adviser to the world champion St. Louis Cardinals. All of them address church groups, giving talks on witness to Christ in professional fields and daily life. Mr. Rickey has hailed the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for “daily witness” in the sharp spotlight of notoriety. “If such forthright testimonies can be found in the tough, competitive world of professional athletics,” he said, “it should be clear that Jesus Christ has something to offer everybody -- everywhere!” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (FRE-NY-10C-64-W)
