- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: #S-4633 APPOINTMENT STIRS PROTEST PARIS -- Metropolitan Seraphim has been appointed by Patriarch Alexei of Moscow to succeed the late Metropolitan Eulogius, of Paris, as Exarch of the western European dioceses of the Russian Orthodox Church, but most of the Russian Orthodox parishes here have protested the appointment. Protests are based largely on charges that Metropolitan Seraphim is a former Nazi collaborator, and claims that control of the western dioceses properly belongs to the Ecumenical Patriarchate at Istanbul. The anti-Moscow group supports Archbishop Vladimir, of Nice, assistant to the late Exarch, who asserts he was named in Metropolitan Eulogius’ will to succeed him. Quentin K.Y. Huang (above), Protestant Episcopal Bishop of Kunming, China, told parishioners of the Grace Episcopal Church here. He is presently touring the United States seeking church assistance for famine-stricken areas in his country that are suffering from the ravages of eight war years. During the war, in which he directed an ambulance corps while surviving 265 bombings, the Bishop befriended many American soldiers. He was formerly Auxiliary Bishop to the late Pietro Cardinal Boetto and now occupies what has long been a cardinalitial see. During the war he became popularly known as the “soup bishop” because he personally distributed meals from hastily-erected “soup kitchens” to thousands of needy who suffered under the German occupation. - Dissidents in Russian Orthodox Church.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: #S-4679 DISSIDENTS IN RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH PARIS -- Posed outside the Church of St. Sergius here where they convened for a four-day diocesan council are clergy of the Russian Orthodox Church who rebelled against the appointment by the Moscow Patriarch of Metropolitan Seraphim as Exarch of the western European dioceses. They have officially elected Archbishop Vladimir (seated, center, holding crozier) in his stead. The council maintained that the western dioceses belong to the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate at Istanbul and not to the Moscow Patriarchate. It further claimed that Archbishop Vladimir was named specifically in the will of the late Metropolitan Eulogius, of Paris, to succeed him as Exarch.
