- Prayer for a bereaved country.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30253 PRAYER FOR A BEREAVED COUNTRY WASHINGTON, D.C. -- To Dr. Frederick Brown Harris, retired Methodist clergyman, fell the task of offering a prayer before the U.S. Senate when news came of the shooting of the late President Kennedy in Dallas. An excerpt from his prayer: “Hold us, we pray, and the people of America, calm and steady and full of faith for the Republic in this tragic hour of our history. God save the state and empower her for whatever awaits for the great world role she has been called to fill in this time of destiny.” Dr. Harris, who said the President’s death marked a “great and tragic loss to the nation,” has been Senate chaplain for 15 years. - Msgr. Ellis resigns Catholic U. post.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30469 MSGR. ELLIS RESIGNS CATHOLIC U. POST WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Msgr. John Tracy Ellis, noted Catholic scholar, resigned as church history professor at the Catholic University of America after 30 years as student and faculty member. He will assume the same teaching post at the University of San Francisco. A teacher at Catholic University, only Pontifical university in this country, for 28 years, Msgr. Ellis had been church history professor there since 1947. He has been on leave from Catholic University for some months and has been residing there. The priest holds worldwide recognition as a church historian and for encouraging Catholics to deepen and broaden their intellectual life. Last year, Msgr. Ellis charged that Catholic University had been undergoing a “type of suppression” for nearly a decade. He made the comment at a time when the names of four noted theologians were withdrawn by university officials from a list of proposed speakers suggested by a student group. - Priest backs Cuba visitors.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-29886 PRIEST BACKS CUBA VISITORS WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Father Felix McGowan, M.M., a priest suspended by his superiors in the Maryknoll order, has thrown his support behind some 50 students who went on an unauthorized trip to Cuba. He is shown here as he addressed the students at a Washington rally. Father McGowan, a former missionary in Bolivia, was suspended from his priestly duties after he himself went to Cuba as a reporter for The Catholic Worker, a periodical published in New York. The suspended Maryknoller commented that there is religious freedom in Cuba. “All the churches are open. Priests can preach. Anybody can go to church,” he said.
