- Panovs to make American debut.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: J-46164 PANOVS TO MAKE AMERICAN DEBUT PHILADELPHIA -- Ballet stars Valery and Galina Panov, who were allowed to leave the Soviet Union last June after a two-year struggle, will perform together for the first time ever in the Western Hemisphere on Dec. 10 at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. Their benefit performance for Soviet Jewry is being sponsored by the Spectrum, Philadelphia's 12,500-seat arena, and the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Philadelphia in cooperation with the National Conference on Soviet Jewry. The Panovs will be accompanied by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Valery Panov, a Jew, had been ousted from his position as leading male dancer with Leningrad's Kirov Ballet when he and his wife, Galina, applied for an exit visa to Israel in April 1972. He was imprisoned twice during 1972. Neither he nor his wife, who had been a solo dancer with the Kirov Ballet, were permitted to dance publicly in the Soviet Union for almost two years. - President disavows general's remarks on Jews.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PCJ-46245 PRESIDENT DISAVOWS GENERAL’S REMARKS ON JEWS WASHINGTON, D.C. -- President Ford has reproved the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. George S. Brown, for making “ill-advised” remarks which claimed that Israel has “too much influence” in the U.S. Congress. The general was also quoted as saying, Jews “own, you know, the banks in this country, the newspapers.” Ron Nessen, the President’s press secretary, told newsmen that Mr. Ford had disavowed the remarks made by Gen. Brown on Oct. 10 at Duke University. He said the President “considers Gen. Brown’s remarks ill-advised and poorly handled” and “feels very strongly about it.” Several national Jewish organizations have urged President Ford to dismiss Gen. Brown. They charged that his remarks, made public Nov. 13, were malicious and prejudicial to Israel and American Jews. Members of Congress also protested the general’s comments. Gen. Brown, in a telegram to the Jewish War Veterans and in a later statement, apologized for his remarks made during a question and answer session following a speech to Duke law students in Durham, N.C. He said his “true feelings concerning Jewish Americans were not reflected” in the remarks reported in the press. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (B-WAS-11B-74-DS)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PCJ-46241 ISSUES THREAT AGAINST ARAFAT NEW YORK -- With a pistol prominently displayed on his desk, Russell Kelner, who claims he is the chief of operations of the Jewish Defense League, tells newsmen that “We have trained men who will make sure that Arafat (Yasir Arafat, head of the Palestine Liberation Organization) and his lieutenants do not leave New York alive” during a press conference at the JDL’s New York headquarters. On the wall behind Mr. Kelner is a picture of Rabbi Meir Kahane, founder of the militant Jewish organization. The day after making his threat against Mr. Arafat, who came to New York to address the United Nations General Assembly, Mr. Kelner was arrested by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and charged with violating a Federal law that prohibits someone from using interstate commerce to threaten to injure and kidnap another person. Mr. Arafat arrived at the United Nations under tight security precautions and addressed the General Assembly without incident. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (B-NY-11B-74-DS)

Rua Rakena, who is head of Church’s Maori Division. Mr. Rakena, 45, says that in the Maori Division, he has been exploring ways in which liturgy and theology can be tailored to the culture of the Maoris, New Zealand’s native Polynesian race. - Father Drinan: Zionism expresses religious beliefs.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: J-46210 FATHER DRINAN: ZIONISM EXPRESSES RELIGIOUS BELIEFS WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Zionism is “more than a political movement; it is an expression of worldwide Jewish religious beliefs and hopes,” Rep. Robert F. Drinan (D-Mass.) said in remarks made before the national executive committee of the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith. “Zionism is a profoundly held spiritual conviction of Jewish fidelity to the biblical covenant which links a people, a faith and a land in a unique religious and mystical unity,” the Roman Catholic Jesuit priest-congressman stated in a speech which was inserted into the Congressional Record. It is “not for a Christian to state,” he added, “whether or not Zionism and Judaism are theologically separable. But politically they cannot be separated. Zionism is the mystique, the ‘elan vital’ of Israel. To equate Zionism with racism represents a frontal assault against the core values of Judaism.” In the light of recent public statements concerning the alleged influence of Jews in this country who are staunch supporters of Israel, it is time, Father Drinan said, “as never before,” for Americans, “especially Christian Americans,” to “reassess the fundamental reasons why the United States has a unique and profound alliance with Israel.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (R-8A-76-DS)

- Butz comment about pope scored.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-46287 BUTZ COMMENT ABOUT POPE SCORED NEW YORK -- Secretary of Agriculture Earl L. Butz has been scored by Roman Catholic and Italian-American leaders after he was quoted using a mock Italian accent in dismissing Pope Paul’s criticism of wealthy nations for telling poor nations to mee their hunger problems by controlling their populations. “He no playa the game, he no maka the rules,” Mr. Butz was reported in the New York Daily News as telling a breakfast meeting of newsmen in Washington. Later, he said his remark was “off the record.” Denouncing the remark as “a crude, pointed insult directed at Pope Paul VI,” the Archdiocese of New York sent a telegram to President Ford demanding that his Agriculture Secretary “apologize immediately or resign.” Rep. Mario Biaggi (D-N.Y.) also sent a telegram to President Ford asking that Mr. Butz be dismissed “for his anti-Catholic, anti-Italian remarks” and charging that the Secretary has “shown an offensive, bigoted mentality.” The New York archdiocesan Senate of Priests also called for his “immediate resignation or removal.” Mr. Butz’ remark, according to an Agriculture Department aide, was a retelling of a joke which he had heard at the World Food Conference in Rome, which Mr. Butz attended as head of the American delegation. The Agriculture Secretary has apologized for it. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (B-NY-11D-74-DS)

- Churches challenged on world hunger.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-46656 CHURCHES CHALLENGED ON WORLD HUNGER NEW YORK -- The Rev. Arthur Simon, a Lutheran clergyman who heads the Christian citizens’ movement on hunger -- Bread for the World -- tells a gathering of Roman Catholic Bishops and priests that U.S. Christians have failed to indicate their concern over world hunger sufficiently to prod government action on the food crisis. In asking, “Where are the Christians?” Mr. Simon observed that Church leaders have said all the right things about the world hunger and poverty situation. But, he added, Christian people at the grassroots level have not responded. He said there is a “big gap” between words and action. The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod clergyman made his remarks in a speech at the New York Catholic Center to diocesan clergy and lay officials concerned with promoting the annual American Catholic Overseas Aid Fund appeal. Va. -- One of the leading opponents of the controversial English textbooks used in Charleston public schools has called for a Congressional investigation of the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare. Mrs. Alice Moore, a member of the Kanawha County School Board and a consistent critic of the texts, declared that “the greatest potential threat to our nation lies within the public education system (and) HEW funds are used to develop, promote and force on our schools these value-changing programs.” Mrs. Moore said she had wired U.S. Education Commissioner Terrel H. Bell, suggesting an “immediate cutoff of all federal funds to teacher training and promotional program for new educational concepts until guidelines can be established to protect citizens’ rights.” She charged that “for years, HEW has been pouring funds into promotional programs that undermine basic American traditions and insult values of most parents.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (GA-WVA-12D-74-DS)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-46624 SOVIET CHURCHMEN VISIT INDIA MADRAS, India -- Two prominent Soviet churchmen, Archbishop Yan Matulis (left) of the Lutheran Church of Latavia and Russian Orthodox Metropolitan Philaret Denisenko of Kiev and Galicia, recently visited India at the invitation of the National Christian Council of India. During their visit they went to New Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Madras. In Madras, they were given a public reception by the Church of South India and other churches and Christian associations. The two churchmen maintained that there is absolute freedom of worship for the 60 million Christians in the Soviet Union and that the government is not interested in how religion is practiced in families. The churches, they said, do not interfere in the political life of the state and confine themselves to religious activities. Churches in the Soviet Union are financially independent of the state and are self-supporting, which each denomination having its own theological schools or seminaries. Any preaching that is done, however, is done only within the churches. “We do not and cannot preach in the streets or any public place,” one of the churchmen explained. But I wouldn’t advocate getting broken legs as a good thing.” In October 1973, the priest was arrested in Mindanao and charged with being critical of the government’s martial law policies and giving support to the illegal Federation of Free Farmers. During the 16 months since his arrest, a period in which he was placed in the custody of his superior in Manila, church leaders throughout the Philippines rallied to his cause. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-46614 FIRST WOMAN AMBASSADOR TO THE VATICAN VATICAN CITY -- In a precedent-shattering move, Pope Paul has accepted the nomination of a woman as an ambassador to the Vatican. The pontiff agreed to receive the credentials of Bernadette Olowo, 27, named by President Idi Amin as Uganda’s envoy to the Holy See. The Pope’s decision breaks what is believed to be a 900-year-old unwritten tradition barring women from becoming official representatives at the Vatican. Miss Olowo, a secretary in Uganda’s embassy in Bonn, will also serve as Ambassador to West Germany, where she will reside. Roman Catholics in Uganda number about 3.5 million out of a total population of 10,764,000. Church-state relations have been erratic under the regime of Muslim President Amin, who has shown both benevolence and hostility toward the Church.
