- Priest war hero dies at 58.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30748 PRIEST WAR HERO DIES AT 58 WORCESTER, Mass. -- Father Joseph T. O'Callahan of Worcester, the only American military chaplain to get the Congressional Medal of Honor--the nation's highest and rarest decoration for courage--died at the age of 58. Left photo shows the priest receiving the Medal of Honor in 1946 from President Truman at the White House. Father O'Callahan, a faculty member of Holy Cross College in Worcester for nearly 20 years, died on the eve of the 19th anniversary of the Japanese suicide attack on the aircraft carrier, Franklin, off the coast of Kobe on March 19, 1945. He received the medal for his heroism during that attack--beyond the call of duty--in helping to save the ship and the lives of men. The priest's exploits on that day were later subjects of a book, several magazine articles, a movie and a Navy training film. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (OJM-WOR-3D-64-NAB)

- Baptism denied baby of abortion advocate.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-45902 BAPTISM DENIED BABY OF ABORTION ADVOCATE MARLBORO, Mass. -- The pastor of a Roman Catholic parish in Marlboro, Mass., refused to baptize the three-month-old child of a Catholic woman who publicly supported abortion, and the Boston archdiocese stated that it was initially “supportive” of the pastor’s position. The archdiocese said in an official statement, however, that as soon as “reconciliation” between the views of the woman and Church was achieved the baby would be baptized. The incident occurred at Immaculate Conception Church when Mrs. Carol Morreale (right), 20, was told that she must renounce her support of abortion advocate William R. Baird of Hempstead, N.Y., or her son could not be baptized. The pastor, Msgr. Francis X. Meehan, acknowledged that he denied baptism to Mrs. Morreale’s baby because of her espousal of Mr. Baird’s pro-abortion stand. “It (abortion) is diametrically opposed to the position the Catholic Church takes on the value and sanctity of human life from the beginning,” he said. Mr. Baird was in Marlboro a few weeks before the incident to promote the establishment of an abortion clinic there and Mrs. Morreale at that time openly campaigned for the clinic.
