- Across the generations.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-45988 ACROSS THE GENERATIONS DUBUQUE, Iowa -- How to be a successful teacher for more than six decades? Sister Mary Orestes Boland, B.V.M. (left), knows and Sister Maureen Tuman, B.V.M., is eager to learn. The elderly nun, who taught “thousands…oh, yes, thousands” of students during the 65 years she spent as a teacher and principal at four Chicago parochial schools, shares her knowledge with the young nun on the law of St. Joseph Convent in Dubuque as both prepared for their Vow Day. Sister Maureen, 25, took her first vows as a Sister of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary; Sister Mary Orestes renewed her commitment for the 75th time. Sister Mary Orestes, who entered the order in 1899, recalls that 20 of her former students entered the priesthood, 30 girls she advised entered religious life, and hundreds of young people continued their education and found worthwhile careers. Hundreds for those former students are now remembering their teacher and sending messages of congratulations to Sister Mary Orestes on her diamond jubilee, messages which Sister Maureen is helping to answer.
