- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-31397 ARIZONA BISHOPS AND THE CANDIDATE PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Shown here with Sen. Barry Goldwater are Protestant Episcopal Bishop William Scarlett (left), now retired, who baptized the Republican nominee into the Episcopal church, and Bishop Joseph M. Harte, present head of the Diocese of Arizona. Bishop Scarlett and Bishop Walter Mitchell, retired former head of the Arizona diocese, have been credited by the candidate as being prime influences in his life. Bishops Scarlett and Mitchell, however, have said they take strong exception to the candidate's social and political views. Bishop Harte has cited Sen. Goldwater's "profound faith in God...deep personal honesty and his great integrity to his principles." He said members of the Church in Arizona "are proud to have had a part in shaping both the character and destiny" of the Republican nominee. - Episcopal Bishop of Liberia.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: EPISCOPAL BISHOP OF LIBERIA #1797 NEW YORK -- The Rt. Rev. Bravid W. Harris, bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church’s Missionary District of Liberia, West Africa, (shown above) conferred here with Presiding Bishop Henry St. George Tucker at Church headquarters. The Episcopal Church has 3,052 communicants and about 2,500 church school pupils and numerically it is the largest church in Liberia. Bishop Harris, whose control extends over 57 churches and mission stations, said he was fortunate to visit the establishments even twice a year, owing to transportation difficulties in the 45,000 sq. mile country. “Along the coast I travel by surf-boat, a kind of sailing vessel which, of course, depends on the winds. It takes three days at best to travel 60 miles,” he said. “Travel to the interior, by river, is accomplished by dug-out canoe.” The Bishop went to West Africa last October. A native of Warrenton, N.C., he was rector of the Grace Episcopal Church, Norfolk, Va., for 19 years when he joined the Church’s National Council here as educational secretary for its Negro work. He plans to return to Liberia in two months. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BH-NY-JOG-2C-6-A-E)
