- Pope greets laity at council.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31595 POPE GREETS LAITY AT COUNCIL VATICAN CITY -- Pope Paul VI waves to lay men and women, priests and nuns as he is carried on his portable throne into St. Peter's Basilica for the opening of the Vatican Council's third session. For the first time in the Church's history, women are being admitted to an Ecumenical Council as lay "auditors," or listeners. The women, representatives of Catholic religious orders or international organizations, are admitted only at certain general congregations. Laymen, also at the third session, were first admitted to the Council as auditors last year. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (ANSA-9C-64-NAB)

- Description

During the audience some priests approached the pontiff to kiss his ring. In a moving address the Pope told the priests he had been following developments in Sudan "with intense pain." He expressed the hope that the Sudanese authorities "may re-examine the entire issue with serene objectivity." Meanwhile the Vatican Radio announced that more than 200 Catholic priests and nuns have been expelled from Sudan, including an Apostolic Vicar and two Prefects Apostolic. Msgr. J. Patrick Carroll-Abbing has founded 40 institutions for homeless boys throughout Italy. Pope Paul expressed his admiration for the Irish priest’s program, which began 19 years ago when he found hundreds of children left homeless and fatherless by the war. “The blessing of God is obviously upon this work,” the pontiff said. “I may visit Boys’ Town soon,” he added, referring to the institution in Rome. Pope Paul also expressed pleasure at the cooperation of the American Committees for Boys’ Towns. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (JA-RO-9B-63-W)
