AUCKLAND, N.Z. -- Queen Elizabeth II attended a worship service in the Cathedral Church of St. Mary here during her tour of the British Commonwealth Nations. She is shown on the grounds of the Cathedral with Anglican Bishop William John Simkin of Auckland. During the service, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh stood, with some 800 others in the congregation, for a moment of silent prayer for those who died or were injured when a holiday express train toppled from a flood-weakened bridge on Christmas Eve in one of New Zealand's worst railroad disasters. In recent months he has been working in Canada with the Rev. Leighton Ford, Mr. Graham's brother-in-law, and will direct a Leighton Ford Crusade in November in Vancouver. Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York, draws his equipment from C.B. Gilbert, storekeeper second class, at Christchurch, N.Z., before undertaking his flights to Navy and scientific stations near the South Pole. On his annual visit to servicemen, Cardinal Spellman crossed the international date line, thus was able to celebrate Masses on two Christmases. - Text transcribed from caption: P-31873 200-YEAR-OLD COMMUNION SET AUCKLAND, N.Z. -- The Rev. Robert E. Marsden, Anglican minister in Cornwall, England, holds a 200-year-old Communion set which he brought with him on a 12,000-mile journey to remote Oihi Bay, in the Bay of Islands, north of Auckland. The set belonged to the clergyman’s great-great-grandfather, the Rev. Samuel Marsden who, on Christmas Day 1814, became the first missionary to preach the Gospel to the Maoris of New Zealand. On Christmas Day, Mr. Marsden also will conduct a service at Oihi Bay and will use the same Communion set. The rite will mark the 150th anniversary of the pioneer missionary’s first service. Moore, Army protestant (Methodist) chaplain, delivering the evening sermon for Jewish troops of the U.S. Marine Corps and Army, at their Friday evening joint services held in a jungle chapel at a Southwest Pacific base. Chaplain Moore delivered the sermon in the absence of the chaplain-rabbi, whose circuit covers a half-dozen islands and bases. Chaplain Moore is a qualified parachutist. Prior to entering the service, he held a pastorate at a Methodist church in Childersburg, Ala. Second Lieutenant Julian C. Levinson of Denver, Colo., is at the right.
