- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PHOTO NUMBER: PC-50607 SANTA IS A COP WITH A HAPPY SUMMONS BALTIMORE, Md. -- While many police departments are using decoy Santas to catch thieves during the holiday season, the Baltimore City Police are using one to put summons on parked cars. When the motorist takes time to read it, he discovers that it is not for a parking violation, but a summons to have a happy holiday and a reminder to lock his car. The imaginative approach is part of the department's anti-crime campaign. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (B-BAL-12B-77-JH)

The service is conducted by another Episcopal clergyman, the Rev. John Black of Philadelphia. After nearly two weeks -- the last few days during which Mr. Hewett went into a “complete fast,” without food or liquid -- physicians ordered his transfer to a hospital in Chester. The clergyman’s wife, who said she and their six children “think he’s 100 per cent correct,” said his state of dehydration made it necessary to administer liquids intravenously in the hospital, though he was continuing to refuse solids. - Description

The Southern Baptist minister said the definite scheduling of the campaign--expected to last 12 weeks--depends on the availability of Earls Court Stadium, which seats 25,000 persons. Mr. Graham said he had been invited to preach in England by a group of 70 laymen who are expected to underwrite the $500,000 crusade. Expressing fears that the country’s moral standards were in danger, the evangelist said he was shocked by crime and immorality statistics in Britain and that England needed a “moral and spiritual awakening.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (U-3D-64-NAB)

- Pope visits prison, says Mass.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30854 POPE VISITS PRISON, SAYS MASS ROME -- Pope Paul VI speaks to about 1,200 inmates on a visit to Regina Coeli (Queen of Heaven) prison in Rome where he celebrated a Mass for them. Some prisoners kneel near the Pope as he talks, while others look down from corridors overlooking the jail’s rotunda. The pontiff was warmly greeted and applauded by the prisoners, many of whom wept. He told them: “You want freedom, welfare, and I feel powerless to give you these things you want so much.” The inmates later joined the Pope in reciting the Our Father and the Hail Mary. Pope Paul repeatedly blessed the prisoners around him and before leaving distributed gifts to all. He was the second pontiff to visit the penal institution which includes men convicted of manslaughter, armed robbery and kidnapping. The first Pope to visit the jail was the late John XXIII in 1958. - Text transcribed from caption: C-30845 KHRUSHCHEV AND CLERGYMAN BUDAPEST -- A rare picture: Nikita Khrushchev (back to camera, left) shakes hands with an unidentified clergyman, described only as “a priest,” at a reception in Budapest. At right is Hungarian Premier Janos Kadar. The picture was taken at a time when the USSR had accelerated its atheistic indoctrination program and the Hungarian Communist regime’s relations with the Roman Catholic Church were reported somewhat improved. The Soviet Premier’s visit, marked by his most outspoken attack on Red Chinese militarism, was notable for many rumors, among them one which foresaw withdrawal of remaining Russian forces from Hungary. It also spurred renewed reports that Joszef Cardinal Mindszenty would be permitted by the regime to leave the U.S. legation at Budapest, where he has taken refuge since the abortive Freedom Fighters’ revolt of 1956.
