- Khrushchev and clergyman.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30845 KHRUSHCHEV AND CLERGYMAN BUDAPEST -- A rare picture: Nikita Khrushchev (back to camera, left) shakes hands with an unidentified clergyman, described only as “a priest,” at a reception in Budapest. At right is Hungarian Premier Janos Kadar. The picture was taken at a time when the USSR had accelerated its atheistic indoctrination program and the Hungarian Communist regime’s relations with the Roman Catholic Church were reported somewhat improved. The Soviet Premier’s visit, marked by his most outspoken attack on Red Chinese militarism, was notable for many rumors, among them one which foresaw withdrawal of remaining Russian forces from Hungary. It also spurred renewed reports that Joszef Cardinal Mindszenty would be permitted by the regime to leave the U.S. legation at Budapest, where he has taken refuge since the abortive Freedom Fighters’ revolt of 1956. - Pope welcomes Archbishop Beran.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-32175 POPE WELCOMES ARCHBISHOP BERAN VATICAN CITY -- Pope Paul VI had a warm welcome for Josef Cardinal Beran as he received the Archbishop of Prague in a 30-minute private audience. The meeting took place two days before the liberated archbishop and 26 other prelates were made cardinals at a secret consistory. During the audience the Pope gave Archbishop Beran a gold pectoral cross and the Czech prelate presented the pontiff with a Bohemian crystal vase engraved with figures of saints. Cardinal Beran was banished from his See in 1949, and though never brought to trial spent 14 years in prison. He was released in 1963, but remained in detention without being allowed to perform his ecclesiastical functions. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (U-2D-65-NAB)

- A cardinal's smile.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-32163 A CARDINAL’S SMILE TABOR, Czechoslovakia -- The high window spelled confinement but the pleasant smile may have indicated knowledge that his trial in a Communist land would soon end. Josef Cardinal Beran is shown as he looked out from the windows of Radvanov Monastery, near Tabor, Czechoslovakia, flour days before announcement he would be permitted to go to Rome to accept his Red Hat as a Prince of the Church. The Archbishop of Prague, never permitted to return to his See upon release from Communist custody, had been isolated from his flock by the Czech regime. Cardinal Beran will live in Rome. - Hungarian bishops consecrated.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31769 HUNGARIAN BISHOPS CONSECRATED BUDAPEST -- An unprecedented ceremony in the Catholic Church of Hungary. Five bishops are consecrated at once in St. Stephen’s Basilica, Budapest, by Archbishop Endre Hamvas of Kalocsa. Appointment of the bishops and their designation as administrators of long-vacant bishoprics followed the “limited” agreement between the Vatican and Hungary’s Communist regime. The bishops can be identified here by the kerchiefs they wear. Left to right, they are Auxiliary Bishop Pal Brezanoczy of Eger, standing and partly obscured by priest; Auxiliary Bishop Jozsef Cserhati of Pecs; Bishop Jozsef Iljias of Csanad; Auxiliary Bishop Jozsef Winkler of Szombathely; and Auxiliary Bishop Jozsef Banic of Gyor. Bishop Winkler had already been raised to the episcopacy by Pope John XXIII but conditions in Hungary had prevented his consecration. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-NY-10E-64-W)
