- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-32110 ATLANTA CITIZENS HONOR DR. KING ATLANTA -- Dr. Martin Luther King’s young daughter, Yolande, stands on tip-toe but isn’t quite tall enough to see over the table decorations as she tries to have a word with her parents. The occasion was a testimonial dinner for the noted Negro integration leader in recognition of his winning the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize. The dinner was attended by a sell-out audience of 1,500 guests, about half of them white. It was sponsored by about 100 leading religious and civic residents of Atlanta, where Dr. King was born and where he is co-pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist church. - Priest leads congregation to immunization center.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-32044 PRIEST LEADS CONGREGATION TO IMMUNIZATION CENTER (No. 2 in a series of 4 photos) NEWARK, N.J. -- The entire Spanish-speaking congregation of a Roman Catholic church in Newark, N.J., is led after Mass to a polio immunization center. The scene is in a film being distributed by the U.S. Public Health Service, “To Open a Door,” which was produced as an aid to community leaders in their efforts to get “unreachable” sections of the population to take advantage of available drugs and vaccines. Clergymen, who encouraged their own congregations -- and enlisted church members to spread the word -- were important participants in the program, which was called a success as 80 per cent of the Negro and Puerto Rican neighborhood received the polio vaccine. - Churchmen play key role in health drive.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-32043 CHURCHMEN PLAY KEY ROLE IN HEALTH DRIVE (No. 1 in a series of 4 photos) NEWARK, N.J. -- Simply making drugs and vaccines available to the public often does not stimulate the desired response in areas most in need of mass immunization, public health officials have discovered. As part of a mounting campaign to reach people and let them know medical assistance is at hand, the U.S. Public Heath Service is distributing a film, “To Open a Door,” which chronicles methods employed in a largely Negro and Puerto Rican section of Newark, N.J., where a “crash program” was undertaken to induce residents to accept the Sabin oral vaccine against polio. Clergymen, like the Baptist minister shown here urging his church members to take the vaccine, played a key role in the project. Officials estimated that 80 per cent of an “almost unreachable” population received the vaccine. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (MWN-NY-1D-65-NBM)

Commuters bound for New York sat with bared heads as the Rev. Craig Biddle III, curate of St. Peter’s Episcopal church, Morristown, N.J., held a 20-minute service on Ash Wednesday. The mobile worship experience, he told the smoking-car congregation, was not an attempt “to play church or perform an experiment -- this service is basically taking the ritual of the commuter and adding it to the liturgy of the church.” Many of the commuters were enthusiastic about the service and expressed home they would be continued. - "Don't marry a pastor."
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-32035 ‘DON’T MARRY A PASTOR’ LONDON -- The outspoken opinion of Mrs. Brenda Wolfe of London -- that being a pastor’s wife is a “lousy job” -- had international impact. Writing the Church of England publication, Prism, she declared that “clergy ought to be celibate” and advised girls that to marry a pastor means to marry a congregation. As her words were spread around the globe, a group of American Lutheran Church pastor’s wives gathered in Minneapolis, Minn., were virtually unanimous in their disagreement with the British woman. Mrs. Irving Strangland of Minneapolis argued that Mrs. Wolfe “misunderstands a man’s calling” and “also missed her own calling, which is to serve first as a Christian, then as a pastor’s wife.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (PP-NY-1D-65-NBM)
