- Billy Graham at Catholic college.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30290 BILLY GRAHAM AT CATHOLIC COLLEGE BELMONT, N.C. -- “A high point of my career” is the way Evangelist Billy Graham described his first address before a Roman Catholic institution. Here, the Southern Baptist clergyman is shown with the Very Rev. John Oetgen, O.S.B., president of Belmont Abbey College. Twelve hundred students gave Dr. Graham an ovation on conclusion of his talk. He told them the Second Vatican Council provided for better interreligious understanding and promoted the “exchange of ideas and thoughts.” Father Oetgen said the Catholic college should not have been praised for inviting Dr. Graham -- “We should have been blamed for having waited so long.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (FRE-NC-11E-63-W)

- Title
- Catholic students hear Billy Graham.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30289 CATHOLIC STUDENTS HEAR BILLY GRAHAM BELMONT, N.C. -- Evangelist Billy Graham is obviously having an enjoyable time as he is interviewed by students of Belmont Abbey College, a Roman Catholic institution at Belmont, N.C. With him is the Very Rev. John Oetgen, O.S.B., president. The Southern Baptist clergyman addressed 1,200 students who gave him a standing ovation. It was his first address at a Catholic institution. Father Oetgen said Belmont Abbey had been praised for inviting the evangelist -- “but after hearing Dr. Graham, I think instead of praise we should have been blamed for having waited so long.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (FRE-NC-11E-63-W)
