- Text transcribed from caption: #PEP-18688. QUEEN ATTENDS SERVICE IN NIGERIA. LAGOS, NIGERIA -- Queen Elizabeth II leaves the Cathedral Church of Christ here after attending a service of commemoration for members of the Royal West African Frontier Force who died during World War II. With her are the Most Rev. James L. C. Horstead, Anglican Archbishop of West Africa; and his chaplain who is holding the Primatial Cross of the Province of West Africa. The sermon was preached by Dr. A. W. Howells, Bishop of Lagos; and the lesson read by the Duke of Edinburgh, who accompanied his wife on her visit. - Text transcribed from caption: P-32049 WCC GENERAL SECRETARY OPENS CENTRAL COMMITTEE MEETING ENUGU, Nigeria -- Annual sessions of the World Council of Churches’ policy-making Central Committee open at Enugu, Nigeria, with an address by Dr. W.A. Visser ‘t Hooft, general secretary of the international Protestant-Anglican-Orthodox organization since it was formed in 1948. Leading world churchmen at the speaker’s table (from left to right) are: Dr. Martin Niemoeller, noted German clergyman and retiring president of the Evangelical Church of Hesse-Nassau; Sir Francis Ibiam, governor of the Eastern Region of Nigeria; Dr. Franklin Clark Fry, president of the Lutheran Church in America and chairman of the WCC Central and Executive Committees; Dr. Arthur Michael Ramsey, Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury; Archbishop Iakovos, Primate of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America; Charles C. Parlin, British Baptist Union general secretary and vice-chairman of the Central Committee.
