- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30469 MSGR. ELLIS RESIGNS CATHOLIC U. POST WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Msgr. John Tracy Ellis, noted Catholic scholar, resigned as church history professor at the Catholic University of America after 30 years as student and faculty member. He will assume the same teaching post at the University of San Francisco. A teacher at Catholic University, only Pontifical university in this country, for 28 years, Msgr. Ellis had been church history professor there since 1947. He has been on leave from Catholic University for some months and has been residing there. The priest holds worldwide recognition as a church historian and for encouraging Catholics to deepen and broaden their intellectual life. Last year, Msgr. Ellis charged that Catholic University had been undergoing a “type of suppression” for nearly a decade. He made the comment at a time when the names of four noted theologians were withdrawn by university officials from a list of proposed speakers suggested by a student group. Bottoms, the first black person ever to be moderator of the 900,000 member Presbyterian Church in the U.S. (Southern). Dr. Bottoms, 66, the pastor of the predominantly white Oakhurst Presbyterian Church in Decatur, Ga., won a first-ballot victory at the denomination's 114th General Assembly in Louisville to succeed Dr. Kraemer as moderator. Dr. Bottoms had already set to other precedents in the 113-year-old PCUS, when he served as the first black moderator of the Louisville Presbytery and the first black moderator of any PCUS synod (Kentucky) -- both in 1962. An excerpt from his prayer: “Hold us, we pray, and the people of America, calm and steady and full of faith for the Republic in this tragic hour of our history. God save the state and empower her for whatever awaits for the great world role she has been called to fill in this time of destiny.” Dr. Harris, who said the President’s death marked a “great and tragic loss to the nation,” has been Senate chaplain for 15 years. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30267 KEY MOMENTS HAD PROTESTANT SETTINGS Key moments in the political life of the late President Kennedy came amid Protestant settings. Above, the man destined to become the nation’s first Roman Catholic chief executive speaks in October, 1960, before the Ministers Association of Greater Houston. Addressing 500 clergymen he delineated his thoughts on separation of Church and State. Below, the photo shows what must have been a heart-warming moment for the young leader. It was provided by Dr. E. S. James of Dallas, left, clergyman-editor of the Texas Baptist Standard. Dr. James had opposed election of a Roman Catholic president in 1960. He came to the White House in February, 1963, however, to tell Mr. Kennedy that “it was a pleasure” to note that religious bias had been scrupulously avoided by the administration. The Baptist leader said the Catholic chief executive was “determined to abide by the Constitutional provision for the separation of Church and State.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (SD-11E-63-W)

- Former chaplain in Moscow dead at 62.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31308 FORMER CHAPLAIN IN MOSCOW DEAD AT 62 WORCESTER, Mass. -- Father Leopold Braun, A.A., who spent 12 years as chaplain to American Roman Catholics in Moscow, died in St. Vincent’s Hospital, Worcester, Mass., at the age of 62. The Assumptionist was the first American priest to go to Moscow under the 1933 Roosevelt-Litvincoff Agreement, providing for U.S. recognition of Soviet Russia. Under the agreement’s religious protocol, Russia consented to let a clergyman go to Moscow to administer to the spiritual needs of employees in the American embassy. Father Braun served in Moscow from early 1934 until late 1945. After he returned to this country he lectured and wrote as an outspoken critic of the Soviet regime. He helped found the Assumptionist Research and Missionary Institute in New York and was its director until last year. Photo shows Father Braun as he testified in 1952 before a special House of Representatives subcommittee in Washington, D.C., which was investigating the massacre of some 10,000 Polish officers in the Katyn Forest in Russia.
