At left, laborers work on the church’s baptistry, a separate building similar in shape to the baptistry. At right Father H.J. Mullin, pastor of St. Michael’s, looks on as the five-and-a-half-ton chunk of Mount Calvary is uncovered by Dr. W.S. Sekul (left) and Steve Marinovich. The two men had been instrumental in getting the rock from Israel to the U.S. The rock will be trimmed a little and a basin carved in the top. Otherwise, it will be left as it is. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30469 MSGR. ELLIS RESIGNS CATHOLIC U. POST WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Msgr. John Tracy Ellis, noted Catholic scholar, resigned as church history professor at the Catholic University of America after 30 years as student and faculty member. He will assume the same teaching post at the University of San Francisco. A teacher at Catholic University, only Pontifical university in this country, for 28 years, Msgr. Ellis had been church history professor there since 1947. He has been on leave from Catholic University for some months and has been residing there. The priest holds worldwide recognition as a church historian and for encouraging Catholics to deepen and broaden their intellectual life. Last year, Msgr. Ellis charged that Catholic University had been undergoing a “type of suppression” for nearly a decade. He made the comment at a time when the names of four noted theologians were withdrawn by university officials from a list of proposed speakers suggested by a student group. - Children 'adopt' Japanese priest.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31183 CHILDREN ‘ADOPT’ JAPANESE PRIEST CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A Japanese priest, Sacred Heart Father Augustine Hiroshi Kabayshi, offered his first Solemn Mass in Cleveland’s Our Lady of Good Counsel church because the 1,049 pupils of the parish school adopted him. The children tried to raise enough money through bake sales and raffles to bring the priest’s parents to the U.S. for his recent ordination in Fall River, Mass. Failing in that, they decided to buy the priest a chalice. Making the presentation here are David Harden and Mary Ann Benedict. The children heard of Father Augustine, a theological student in the U.S. since 1958 and the first Japanese native ordained in the Sacred Heart Fathers, through a priest of the parish who served as a missionary in Japan. Father Augustine is a convert from Buddhism. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (RLF-RR-6D-64-NAB)
