Cap., of Milwaukee, vice-president; Father Bernardin Patterson, O.S.B., of South Union, Ky., president; Father Clement Faistl, of Columbus, Ohio, secretary; and Father Philip Allen, of Wichita, Kans., treasurer. Father Bernardin, prior of St. Maur’s Priory, South Union, Ky., is the first Negro to head a Benedictine monastery in the United States. Amos Ryce II (left), pastor of Lane Tabernacle Christian Methodist Episcopal church, was elected president of the Metropolitan Church Federation of Greater St. Louis. He is the first Negro to head the 55-year-old organization. The federation also named Dr. Ned Cole (right), dean of Christ Church Cathedral (Episcopal), as "Ecumenical Man of the Year for 1963" for his ministry in his congregation, the federation and the community. Dr. Cole has been elected Bishop Coadjutor of the Protestant Episcopal Diocese of Central New York and plans to move to Syracuse, N.Y., in the spring. It was announced at Assemblies of God missions headquarters at Springfield, Mo., that he would conduct evangelistic campaigns in British Honduras and Jamaica during January and February. - Text transcribed from caption: C-29744 ‘HOODLUM PRIEST’ DIES ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Father Charles Dismas Clark, S.J., known as the “Hoodlum priest” for his work in rehabilitating former prison inmates, died in St. Louis after a long illness. He was 62. In 1959 he founded Dismas House here as a haven for ex-convicts. He is shown here before the institution named for the “good thief” crucified beside Christ. Father Clark also was responsible for setting up several other such centers in U.S. cities.
