- Two-way phones connect fund dinners.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-32226 TWO-WAY PHONES CONNECT FUND DINNERS NEW YORK -- Dr. Franklin Clark Fry, president of the Lutheran Church in America, makes telephone contact with one of nine simultaneous dinners held in as many cities to open an $8 million fund campaign for relocation of the Lutheran Theological Seminary in downtown Philadelphia. Dr. Fry and Dr. Donald R. Heiges (center), president of the seminary, addressed the nine dinners from New York via the phone hookup. At right is Dr. Gunnar Knudsen of Reading, Pa., chairman of the board for the seminary. The board voted early in February to relocate the seminary, now in the Mt. Airy section of Philadelphia, to “an urban-centered, university-oriented site.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (FRE-NY-3A-65-NBM)

- Vacant store serves as church.
- Description
- Children of the East Harlem neighborhood gather about Rev. Don Benedict (standing right near center door) and Rev. J. Archie Hargraves (extreme right), co-pastors, as they, accompanied by two field workers from the Union Theological Seminary, are about to enter the new East Harlem Protestant Parish. The new "storefront church" is the first unit opened under the sponsorship of the four Protestant denominations: New York City Society of the Methodist Church, Baptist City Society, New York City Congregational Christian Church Association and the Presbytery of New York. Its work will be conducted under the supervision of the New York City Mission Society, with the Union Theological Seminary's field department providing pastors and part-time workers.

- Chaplain to the wounded.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: CHAPLAIN TO THE WOUNDED #1683 NEW YORK -- The end of the war and demobilization have altered some aspects of the Army chaplain work, but for some the job is still vital. Caring for the wounded in the hospitals is a task to which many churchmen in uniform are turning as a continuation of the work they performed so ably during the war. These four chaplains at Halloran General Hospital on Staten Island, are typical of the clergymen working in large army and veterans hospitals. They are left to right: Lt. Col. John M. Bellamy, Catholic, Massena, N.Y.; Capt. Aaron Blumenthal, Jewish, Houston, Texas; Lt. John D. Laida, Protestant, Syracuse, N.Y.; and Capt. Emanuel Carlsen, Protestant, Chicago. - Chaplain to African Catholic students.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31744 CHAPLAIN TO AFRICAN CATHOLIC STUDENTS NEW YORK -- Father William T. Anderson, S.M., chaplain to African Catholic college students since 1963, has a “campus” which covers most of the continent below the Sahara. In his ministry he travels extensively, visiting 37 colleges and universities and working with 40 other priest-chaplains. Of the 37 schools of higher learning, 14 are in South Africa, and only one of them is Catholic -- the Lovanium in Leopoldville, the Congo. Father Anderson’s post is that of chaplain of the African Secretariat of Pax Romana, an international Catholic student movement. He was in Washington, D.C. recently for a Pax Romana meeting. Concerning his work as a roving missionary for campuses, the Cleveland-born priest believes that the best hope for Africa’s future lies in the native Catholic student. College graduates, he says, move into the mainstream of African national life and assume top political and administrative positions. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (L-10D-64-NAB)
