- Description

Clutching their dolls, Gloria and Jeannie Rosenkranz receive a blessing from Dean Frank L. Tutus. The old rite is held in connection with the Feastday [sic] of the Holy Innocents, marked on the fourth day of the Christmas Octave (Dec. 28). It commemorates the slaying of babies by King Herod in the Holy land in an attempt to kill the Infant Jesus, Who was taken by St. Joseph to Egypt. Dean Tutus said one of the ideas behind the blessing is for girls to learn through caring for their dolls to love eventually their own babies and bring them up in the nurture of the church. Commuters bound for New York sat with bared heads as the Rev. Craig Biddle III, curate of St. Peter’s Episcopal church, Morristown, N.J., held a 20-minute service on Ash Wednesday. The mobile worship experience, he told the smoking-car congregation, was not an attempt “to play church or perform an experiment -- this service is basically taking the ritual of the commuter and adding it to the liturgy of the church.” Many of the commuters were enthusiastic about the service and expressed home they would be continued. These youngsters, white and Negro, learn together, with Rector Thomas Logan getting a big smile out of all of them. Mr. Logan, formerly at St. Michael’s and All Angels Church, has raised Calvary from chapel status to that of an independent church. His present congregation is 90 per cent Negro, ten per cent white. Calvary formerly was predominantly white, but a population shift cut its weekly Sunday attendance to about 25. It then was merged with St. Michael’s and All Angels Church, with Mr. Logan moving his congregation to Calvary in September 1945. Average Sunday attendance now is 250. - Injunction served during racial prayer service.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-29735 INJUNCTION SERVED DURING RACIAL PRAYER SERVICE CLARKSDALE, Miss. -- One of the few Clarksdale, Miss., white men to step inside the city’s First Baptist church during a prayer service for racial unity was a county deputy sheriff. He served an injunction on two of 36 ministers from several states who traveled to Clarksdale at the request of the National Council of Churches’ special Commission on Religion and Race. The injunction, while not applicable to the religious observance in the Negro church, was a sweeping ban against virtually all types of integration demonstrations. None of the approximately 20 white Clarksdale clergymen took part in the prayer service. The NCC commission and Clarksdale Negro ministers held the service in an effort to establish communication with local authorities. The injuction was handed here to the Rev. Brad Minturn, left, a Protestant Episcopal minister of Silver Spring, Md., and the Rev. Gerald Forshey, a leader of the Interracial Council of Methodists in Chicago, Ill. - Clergymen support Mississippi rights effort.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31682 CLERGYMEN SUPPORT MISSISSIPPI RIGHTS EFFORT McCOMB, Miss. -- Five Protestant Episcopal clergymen -- part of an interdenominational group of 20 ministers who spent a week working with civil rights volunteers in Mississippi -- stand in front of the bomb-blasted Society Hill Baptist church at McComb. Sixteen structures used by civil rights workers were bombed in the McComb area from June 21 to the end of September, four of them churches which were totally destroyed. The National Council of Churches race commission planned to send groups of clergymen to Mississippi to assist rights workers through the fall and winter. Shown here (left to right) are the Rev. Bruce Young of Attleboro, Mass.; the Rev. Thomas D. Allen and the Rev. Quinlan Gordon of Washington, D.C.; the Rev. Malcolm Boyd of Detroit, Mich., and the Rev. Earl A. Neil of Chicago. During their stay in McComb, Mr. Allen, Mr. Gordon, Mr. Boyd and Mr. Neil attempted to visit 24 Negroes who had been arrested for “criminal syndicalism,” a Mississippi law which forbids virtually any activity which promotes social or political change. In spite of repeated requests to county officials, they were denied permission to see the prisoners. “We had a feeling that we were completely outside the United States and were being treated as enemy aliens,” Mr. Boyd said.
