- At Little 'Hoppers' Hospital.
- Description
- The Rev. P. B. Colthurst, an Anglican clergyman, is shown with one of his patients at the "Little Hoppers Hospital." In 1898, the Rev. Richard Wilson, of Stepney, went into the hopfields to see how his hopping parishioners were faring. He was horrified to see that they were uncared for, and that a mother had just lost her baby through lack of medical attention. From that moment the "Little Hoppers Hospital" was born, and from an early start in one room the hospital is now being - though, as a notice states, it is not nationalized. About the year 1907 a public house ("Rose and Crown") in Five Oak Green, near Tonbridge, was bought by voluntary help, and this has now become the hospital - and the old skittle alley is one of the wards. Only children are cared for, although immediate medical attention would be given to anybody that needed it. This picture shows the old inn sign - now with a different motto.

The tree, planted by Canon Collins, was said to be a cutting from one that survived the atomic bombing of Nagasaki in 1945. Archbishop Kyprian, visiting England at the canon’s invitation, also addressed thousands at a ban-the-bomb demonstration in Trafalgar Square. He spoke in Russian and a translation of his talk was read by Canon Collins. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (U-4A-64-NAB)

- "Don't marry a pastor."
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-32035 ‘DON’T MARRY A PASTOR’ LONDON -- The outspoken opinion of Mrs. Brenda Wolfe of London -- that being a pastor’s wife is a “lousy job” -- had international impact. Writing the Church of England publication, Prism, she declared that “clergy ought to be celibate” and advised girls that to marry a pastor means to marry a congregation. As her words were spread around the globe, a group of American Lutheran Church pastor’s wives gathered in Minneapolis, Minn., were virtually unanimous in their disagreement with the British woman. Mrs. Irving Strangland of Minneapolis argued that Mrs. Wolfe “misunderstands a man’s calling” and “also missed her own calling, which is to serve first as a Christian, then as a pastor’s wife.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (PP-NY-1D-65-NBM)
