- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-32110 ATLANTA CITIZENS HONOR DR. KING ATLANTA -- Dr. Martin Luther King’s young daughter, Yolande, stands on tip-toe but isn’t quite tall enough to see over the table decorations as she tries to have a word with her parents. The occasion was a testimonial dinner for the noted Negro integration leader in recognition of his winning the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize. The dinner was attended by a sell-out audience of 1,500 guests, about half of them white. It was sponsored by about 100 leading religious and civic residents of Atlanta, where Dr. King was born and where he is co-pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist church. He talks here with an old Chinese woman who came to him for funds to start a fruit business. Called “Lui Sam Fu” by the refugees, Father Ruiz was a missionary in China before the Reds took over. Since 1951 he has aided thousands of refugees from behind the “Bamboo Curtain.” Last year 10,801 persons registered at Casa Ricci. The exodus to Macao will continue, Father Ruiz says, “as long as people do not find more food and liberty in Red China.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (U-NY-9C-63-RB)

- New York rights groups stage school boycott.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30553 NEW YORK RIGHTS GROUPS STAGE SCHOOL BOYCOTT NEW YORK -- The Rev. Milton A. Galamison, center, Presbyterian pastor from Brooklyn, headed a drive which resulted in a massive boycott of public schools in New York City on Feb. 3. The Negro civil rights leader is shown here at a press conference with representatives of the National Association for Puerto Rican Civil Rights -- Gilberto G. Valentina and Irma V. Santaella. The boycott planners declared that a School Board plan for integration was inadequate and that the demonstration would be held. Several hundred "freedom schools" were established, mainly in churches, for the many thousand youngsters staying away from their regular classes for the day.
