- Religion on the move.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: RELIGION ON THE MOVE #3169 Shifting populations throughout the United States and Canada during the war years have made churchmen transportation conscious, and as a result they have turned to many different conveyances to bring God’s word to their flocks. The Rev. Gilbert Thompson, of Moose Factory, Ont., uses dogs and snowshoes to reach his congregation. He ministers to both whites and Cree Indians, the latter in their own tongue. They in turn translate his message into Eskimo for any of that race present. Mr. Thompson prefers travel by boat in the summer to dogs or snowshoes in winter. - Rustic cross attracts lakeside worshippers.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-31411 RUSTIC CROSS ATTRACTS LAKESIDE WORSHIPPERS JACKSON, Wyo. -- Lovely Jackson Lake and the soaring peaks of the Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming provide a beautiful wilderness setting for worshipping vacationers. Minutes before this photo was taken, Donald Scaar, student minister in his second year at Duke Divinity School, Durham, N.C., had placed his rustic cross at the water's edge. Soon worshippers from the nearby campground arrived for the scheduled Sunday service. To be ordained as a minister of the Reformed Church of America, Mr. Scaar is one of some 200 college and seminary students participating in the National Council of Churches' Ministry in the National Parks. Over one million vacationers in 36 parks are served in the summer phase of the program and many more will take advantage of year-round and special winter ministries in nine parks. - Charismatic renewal in Japan.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-46167 CHARISMATIC RENEWAL IN JAPAN TOKYO -- Japanese Charismatics worship during an ecumenical Charismatic Renewal seminar held at Hatsudai Catholic Church in Tokyo. The seminar brought together Catholic and Protestant Charismatics from an estimated 35 denominations. It was one of a series of seminars held in Japan's major cities during October. The Rev. Lester A. Pritchard, director of Team Thrust Ministries of Vancouver, Canada, sponsoring organization of the Holy Spirit Seminars in Japan, told the seminar that while the Charismatic Renewal is an effort to teach spiritual unity, it is in no way an ecumenical movement. "Let's not try to make Pentecostals out of everybody,” he urged. "And let's not aim at making Catholics out of Protestants. No church has the whole truth. We must exchange pulpits. We seek not union but unity." (SEE ALSO RNS PHOTO PC-46166) Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO by Nell Kennedy (NK-JPN-10D-74-DS)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-46568 DOUBLES AS A DEALER LAS VEGAS -- Father Thomas Higgins, S.J., can usually be found on the campus of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, where he is an assistant chaplain and a professor. But during the Summer and school vacations, he can be found at the Royal Inn Casino in Las Vegas, where he is a blackjack dealer. The 42-year-old Jesuit priest feels he is carrying his message to the people. “You can’t preach Christ if your experience is entirely different from that of other people,” he says. “If priests were cab drivers or bus drivers or if they took different jobs, they would be much more to all kinds of people.” Father Higgins’ customers at the casino get his good counsel, although they seldom find out that the man behind the red satin tie is a priest. “Sometimes I tell people, ‘You’re drunk. Why don’t you go home? You’re going to drop your whole load,’” he said. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (A-LA-12D-74-DS)
