- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30477 OFF-BEAT THEATER PRODUCES MINISTER’S PLAY DETROIT -- Opening night for an experiment in theater in Detroit. The Concept-East is an off-Broadway type of theater which, located in an oldtime barroom, now offers culture instead of beer. One of the first works presented was by the Rev. Malcolm Boyd, left, Protestant Episcopal clergyman long active in youth and race relations work. With him are Woodie King, center, and Cliff Frazier, actors in the minister’s play, “The Community.” Productions are carried on in a coffeehouse atmosphere. Mr. Boyd’s play describes his feelings about race and religion. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (HW-DET-1B-64-W)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-45700 CENTER OF ATTRACTION SAGINAW, Mich. -- Father Bartholomew Kestell and his puppet, “Father Oscar,” entertain a group of youngsters at St. Joseph School in Saginaw, Mich. The Capuchin priest was in the Midwest for a brief vacation following his second four-year mission stint on the Persian Gulf sheikdom of Bahrain Island. A man in perpetual motion who is sometimes called “The Brown Tornado” (for his brown robe) by fellow priests, Father Barth, a native of New Holstein, Wisc., is widely known in Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan for his wide range of talents. He is an architect, an archaeologist, a puppeteer, a historian and a former Navy chaplain. When Father Barth returns to the Mid-East, he will begin construction on the first Catholic church in Oman, another Persian Gulf sheikdom, in more than 300 years. The church will reflect Arabic architecture because, as Father Barth explains, 50 years from now it might serve as a mosque. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BFS-SAG-6C-74-DS)
