- Text transcribed from caption: C-31607 PRIZE-WINNING MODERNISTIC CHURCH ART DETROIT -- These striking compositions won top prizes in their respective categories at the 4th biennial National Religious Art Exhibition in the galleries of Sacred Heart Seminary, Detroit. Top left is "Veronica's Veil," by Hans Moller of New York, a first prize winner in paintings; top right: "Crucifix," by Lester Raymer of Lindsbord [Lindsborg], Kan., best sculpture; and bottom: "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse," by Lyndon F. Pomeroy of Billings, Mont., best work in metalcraft. The art exhibit and contest drew 400 entries -- paintings, sculpture, mosaics, glass and metal craft -- from 250 artists around the country. - Text transcribed from caption: P-30531 DETROIT COUNCIL NAMES NEGRO DETROIT, Mich. -- Dr. Joseph Lawrence Roberts, pastor of the 2,200-member Bethel African Methodist Episcopal church in Detroit, Mich., became the first Negro to be elected president of the Detroit Council of Churches in the 45-year history of the organization. He is shown here with Dr. G. Merrill Lenox, executive director of the Council, who noted in his remarks welcoming Dr. Roberts to the post that more than 20 percent of the organization's constituency is Negro.
