- Happy day for eight youngsters.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-45698 HAPPY DAY FOR EIGHT YOUNGSTERS NEW YORK -- While Confirmation is normally not an unusual sacrament, it is for a group of eight students -- all of them brain-damaged or emotionally disturbed children -- as they are confirmed by Auxiliary Bishop Patrick Ahern of New York during a ceremony in St. Eugene’s Chapel of Sacred Heart Church in the Bronx. The youngsters are children at the Murray Hill Classes, a nonsectarian private school for children who have been excluded from public school because of the severity of their illnesses. The school rents the chapel from Sacred Heart Parish and uses it as a classroom building. Father Joseph Gleeson (right), associate pastor at the parish, is a volunteer teacher in the school’s released time religious education program. It was he who prepared the youngsters for Confirmation. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (CS-NY-6C-74-DS)

- 20,000 hear the Rev. Moon.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-46043 20,000 HEAR THE REV. MOON NEW YORK -- Gesturing enthusiastically, the Rev. Sun Myung Moon delivers a sermon on “The New Future of Christianity” to an overflow crowd of more than 20,000 at New York’s Madison Square Garden. The Korean preacher’s appearance at the famed arena followed a “media blitz” which saw poster pasted up all over the city, frequent TV commercials and hundreds of Mr. Moon’s followers on street corners handing out leaflets and free tickets to the rally. Although the Garden was standing-room-only at the start of the program, people began leaving by the hundreds after listening to 20 minutes of Mr. Moon’s fiery rhetoric. By the end of the sermon more than half of the audience had walked out. During his two and one-half hour discourse, Mr. Moon claimed to have “direct revelations from God” and declared that “the messiah” will come soon and establish the “physical kingdom of God on earth.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (CS-NY-9C-74-DS)

Ezra Graley (in light coat, center), the pastor of Summit Ridge Church of God in adjoining Lincoln County, leads opponents of the controversial English supplemental textbooks in a demonstration at Charleston, W.Va. Mr. Graley, a resident of Kanawha County (which includes Charleston), is free under a $2,500 bond on appeal of a 30-day jail sentence and $250 fine for violating a court injunction limiting the number of pickets on Kanawha County school board property to five, and prohibiting demonstrators from interfering with the “free ingress and agress” [sic] of pedestrians or vehicles. He was one of three ministers to be arrested and sentenced. The ministers, like many of the county’s coal miners and other parents, consider the textbooks to be anti-Christian and anti-American. - Says TV should improve quality of life.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-45928 SAYS TV SHOULD IMPROVE QUALITY OF LIFE NEW YORK -- Father Ellwood Kieser, C.S.P., the priest-producer of TV’s “Insight” series -- and a driving force behind the new Humanitas awards for TV programs that stress human values -- believes television can serve the quality of life and help people “to grow, develop and become more fully human.” He also feels that TV can provide “an experience of common brotherhood” not easily forgotten. For the past 14 years, Father Kieser’s “Insight” series has made a valiant -- although often lonely -- effort to bring to this nation’s viewers, through top-notch dramatic presentations, Christian values which relate to the whole spectrum of life’s experience. Of the Humanitas awards -- which provide prizes of $25,000, $15,000 and $10,000 to writers of prime-time TV fare -- the Philadelphia-born Paulist said it was the best way he and his Insight colleagues could devise to inspire and motivate TV programming that will humanize an audience. - Priest and pianist form unusual team.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-46224 PRIEST AND PIANIST FORM UNUSUAL TEAM NEW YORK -- Father Peter O’Brien, S.J., introduces the Mary Lou Williams Trio at a concert. The priest and the pianist are a team. “Her contribution to me is very simple to explain,” the assistant pastor of St. Ignatius Loyola Church in New York says. “She’s my spiritual adviser.” For his part, the Jesuit priest has served as business manager for the jazz pianist and composer since 1970. An unusual occupation for a man who spends most of his time preaching, visiting the ill, or teaching religion to grade school students? “I am not the same as a Las Vegas act manager,” Father O’Brien explains. “Mary Lou is one of the few performers I would call a true artist, and she is completely devoted to jazz.” Describing the relevance of all this to a man of the cloth, he notes that “true jazz is a product of oppression and symbolizes man’s spiritual triumph over it, so it is a very religious experience.” This is particularly true of Miss Williams’ music, which includes such pieces as her own “Hymn in Honor of St. Martin de Porres” and “Mary Lou’s Mass.” He says his motivation for becoming her business manager “really stems from by belief that an artist is someone who has been blesses [sic] with a rare gift, and that gift should have its place in the world for everyone to see.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (C-NY-11A-74-DS)
