With him is the Very Rev. John Oetgen, O.S.B., president. The Southern Baptist clergyman addressed 1,200 students who gave him a standing ovation. It was his first address at a Catholic institution. Father Oetgen said Belmont Abbey had been praised for inviting the evangelist -- “but after hearing Dr. Graham, I think instead of praise we should have been blamed for having waited so long.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (FRE-NC-11E-63-W)

- Text transcribed from caption: PC-32044 PRIEST LEADS CONGREGATION TO IMMUNIZATION CENTER (No. 2 in a series of 4 photos) NEWARK, N.J. -- The entire Spanish-speaking congregation of a Roman Catholic church in Newark, N.J., is led after Mass to a polio immunization center. The scene is in a film being distributed by the U.S. Public Health Service, “To Open a Door,” which was produced as an aid to community leaders in their efforts to get “unreachable” sections of the population to take advantage of available drugs and vaccines. Clergymen, who encouraged their own congregations -- and enlisted church members to spread the word -- were important participants in the program, which was called a success as 80 per cent of the Negro and Puerto Rican neighborhood received the polio vaccine. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31682 CLERGYMEN SUPPORT MISSISSIPPI RIGHTS EFFORT McCOMB, Miss. -- Five Protestant Episcopal clergymen -- part of an interdenominational group of 20 ministers who spent a week working with civil rights volunteers in Mississippi -- stand in front of the bomb-blasted Society Hill Baptist church at McComb. Sixteen structures used by civil rights workers were bombed in the McComb area from June 21 to the end of September, four of them churches which were totally destroyed. The National Council of Churches race commission planned to send groups of clergymen to Mississippi to assist rights workers through the fall and winter. Shown here (left to right) are the Rev. Bruce Young of Attleboro, Mass.; the Rev. Thomas D. Allen and the Rev. Quinlan Gordon of Washington, D.C.; the Rev. Malcolm Boyd of Detroit, Mich., and the Rev. Earl A. Neil of Chicago. During their stay in McComb, Mr. Allen, Mr. Gordon, Mr. Boyd and Mr. Neil attempted to visit 24 Negroes who had been arrested for “criminal syndicalism,” a Mississippi law which forbids virtually any activity which promotes social or political change. In spite of repeated requests to county officials, they were denied permission to see the prisoners. “We had a feeling that we were completely outside the United States and were being treated as enemy aliens,” Mr. Boyd said.
