- Deportation hearing for Maryknoll priest.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-45863 DEPORTATION HEARING FOR MARYKNOLL PRIEST MARYKNOLL, N.Y. -- Father Edward M. Gerlock, M.M. (right, top photo) a Maryknoll missionary from Binghampton, N.Y., appears at a deportation hearing in the Philippines with his chief counsel, Lorenzo M. Tanada, a former Senator in the Philippine National Congress. Below, documents are marked during the hearings as spectators look on. At the table, from left to right, are: Mr. Tanada, Father Gerlock, a deportation board clerk and a Philippine National Constabulary officer called as a witness. Maryknoll Bishop Joseph W. Regan, M.M., of Tagum stands at far right. Father Gerlock, arrested by the government at Tagum on the island of Mindanao last October, is still awaiting a ruling by the deportation board although the hearing on his case began in December 1973. Charged with being critical of Filipino martial law, he is free to “come and go” within the city of Manila but is still in a kind of “limbo” so far as his future is concerned. One of three Maryknollers arrested in October 1973 and slated for deportation, the veteran of 12 years’ service in the Philippines decided to plead “not guilty” to charges and demand a hearing. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-32039 MISSIONARY PRODUCES RELIGIOUS FILMS KYOTO, Japan -- Father James F. Hyatt of Seattle, Wash., a Maryknoll missionary in Japan who produced the award-winning motion picture “Six People -- Ten Legs,” directs filming of a scene. The 30-minute, black-and-white movie won top prize last December at the First Pan-Asia Festival of the International Catholic Film Office (OCIC) in India. It was cited as the best film made in Asia “inspired by the cultural and artistic riches” of that continent. “Six People -- Ten Legs” tells the story of a ten-year-old crippled boy whose selfish attitude is dramatically changed by the kindness of his classmates. The film, seen on national TV in the U.S. and Japan was made in conjunction with the Maryknoll Fathers’ Good Shepherd Mass Communications Movement in Japan. George Ogle, a United Methodist missionary, waves as he boards a plane in Seoul after he was ordered deported from South Korea for criticizing the regime of President Park Chung Hee. Forced to leave his wife and four children behind, the 45-year-old native of Pennsylvania was placed on a California-bound Korean jetliner by police. Deportation was ordered when the missionary, who had been in South Korea for 20 years, refused to retract comments critical of the Park government for its arrests of students, intellectuals and clergy who asked for a restoration of democracy. Father Sinnott, a resident of South Korea since 1950, is Vicar General of the Inchon diocese, west of Seoul. It was the second time in a week that he had been arrested while taking part in a demonstration. The women, mostly wives and mothers of dissidents jailed under emergency decrees of President Park Chung Hee last Summer, said they wanted to present a petition asking Mr. Ford to request the release of the prisoners when he met Mr. Park.
