- Church sponsors employment bureau.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: CHURCH SPONSORS EMPLOYMENT BUREAU #3319 CHICAGO -- To aid its returning servicemen--more than 700--to find jobs, the North Austin Lutheran church here has opened an employment bureau. Here the Rev. Fred W. Otterbein (left) interviews one of his parishioners, Charles G. Huebner, returned vet who saw service with the Signal Corps, and is seeking placement in the electronics or communications industry. Dr. Otterbein keynotes his interviews with shirt-sleeve informality and after learning the veteran’s qualifications gets in touch with one of the many companies cooperating with the bureau. The service also is open to any of the other 5,000 members of the congregation who are in search of jobs. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (AN-CHI-MES-4C-6-L-W)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-45918 RULE WOMEN’S ORDINATIONS INVALID CHICAGO -- Presiding Bishop John M. Allin (left) of the Episcopal Church conducts a Communion service during the emergency session of the denomination’s House of Bishops in Chicago, called to consider the recent ordinations of 11 women deacons to the priesthood. At right are two of the women ordained on July 29 in Philadelphia: the Revs. Allison Cheek of Virginia (standing) and Jeanette Piccard of Minnesota. By a large majority of those present and voting, the bishops ruled that the Philadelphia ceremony did not meet the necessary conditions for the ordination of deacons to the priesthood and declared the ordinations “not valid.” They referred the entire matter, including any disciplinary action to be taken against the participants, to the Church’s Fall 1976 General Convention. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-45981 ‘A RESPONSIBLE REBEL’ CHICAGO -- What’s the daughter of a leading Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod “conservative” doing on the Board of Directors of an organization of Missouri Synod “moderates?” Edith Rehbein, 31-year-old daughter of Dr. Martin Scharlemann, describes herself as “a responsible rebel -- deeply rooted in a Lutheran heritage and repulsed by the current Synodical administration’s contamination of that heritage.” Strong words for a woman whose father became a symbol of support for Synodical President Dr. Jacob A.O. Preus during three months of service as acting president of Concordia Theological Seminary in St. Louis earlier this year. But shortly after her election to the Board of Directors of the Evangelical Lutherans in Mission (ELIM) at its national assembly in Chicago, Mrs. Rehbein said of her father, “I only hope that he will remember his own early 30s.” Ironically, Dr. Scharlemann was considered a leading Synodical “moderate” in the early 1960s. He came under fire at the Missouri Synod’s 1962 convention for having written articles saying that the Bible writers were men who wrote from where they were as people of their day and objecting to calling the Bible inerrant. At the convention, he promised to withdraw the essays. Mrs. Rehbein is an English professor at Middlesex (N.J.) County College and is married to the Rev. David M. Rehbein of Somerset, N.J. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30996 PROTESTANT-SPONSORED ‘DEMONSTRATION CATHOLIC MASS’ CHICAGO -- An ecumenical first in the U.S. -- a Demonstration (Roman Catholic) English Mass -- will be held May 25 at the Rockefeller Memorial Chapel at the University of Chicago. Twenty Protestant groups -- five seminaries and 14 churches -- are co-sponsors of the program along with the Catholic Adult Education Center of Chicago and local Catholic parishes. Denominations to be represented include Baptist, Unitarian, United Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ, Presbyterian, Methodist, Luther and Protestant Episcopal groups. The experimental mass in English to be demonstrated is the work of a young Chicago composer, Dennis Fitzpatrick, shown below. According to the Catholic Adult Education Center, “because his work incorporates actual and contemplate changes by Vatican Council II, it will afford a new experience for Roman Catholic and Protestant alike.” Dr. Howard C. Schomer, president of Chicago Theological Seminary (United Church of Christ), said “many traditional Protestant misunderstandings of the intent of Roman Catholic worship may be dissolved in surprise and joy at this ecumenical event at Rockefeller Chapel.” Mr. Roger Nachtwey, a singer, will portray the role of the “priest” in the demonstration mass.
