In his ministry he travels extensively, visiting 37 colleges and universities and working with 40 other priest-chaplains. Of the 37 schools of higher learning, 14 are in South Africa, and only one of them is Catholic -- the Lovanium in Leopoldville, the Congo. Father Anderson’s post is that of chaplain of the African Secretariat of Pax Romana, an international Catholic student movement. He was in Washington, D.C. recently for a Pax Romana meeting. Concerning his work as a roving missionary for campuses, the Cleveland-born priest believes that the best hope for Africa’s future lies in the native Catholic student. College graduates, he says, move into the mainstream of African national life and assume top political and administrative positions. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (L-10D-64-NAB)

- Honorably retired.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: HONORABLY RETIRED #1787 NEW YORK -- Almost a tradition in itself is this old bell standing outside the rectory of St. George’s Protestant Episcopal church here. Made in England, it cost 250 pounds sterling and was presented to the church by Thomas H. Smith in 1818. For many years it hung in the old church in Beekman Street and afterward in the chapel at 14th Street. In 1905 it was removed to its present site after it was reported that it had been cracked by improper ringing. Once asked by the city Fire Department if the bell could be rung in case of fire, the vestry called attention to a by-law of the church directing the sexton “to have the bell rung at all alarms of fire.” Shown inspecting the bell is the rector of St. George’s, the Rev. Elmore M. McKee. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BH-NY-MES-3C-6-O-A-E)

- Text transcribed from caption: CATHOLIC MEDICAL MISSIONS #C-2021 NEW YORK -- Never before have mission demands been greater than today, both in the religious and in the medical field. At the headquarters here of the Catholic Medical Mission Board, medical supplies and equipment by the ton are sent out yearly to distant mission stations all over the world. This necessitates a great deal of correspondence, which is done with the help of sisters of the Daughters of Mary, Health of the Sick, and lay secretaries. Here the Rev. Edward F. Garesche, S.J., president and director of the Mission Board, discusses with a nun the disposition of some of the voluminous correspondence.
