- Text transcribed from caption: P-31792 INDIA CHRISTIAN LEADER NAMED VISITING PROFESSOR NEW YORK -- Dr. J. Russell Chandran, principal of the United Theological College in Bangalore, India, has been appointed Henry W. Luce Visiting Professor of World Christianity at Union Theological Seminary in New York for 1964-65. Announcing the appointment, Dr. John C. Bennett, seminary president, hailed the Church of South India clergyman-educator as “one of the most influential Christian leaders in India.” Dr. Chandran has been a leader of Faith and Order activities of the World Council of Churches, serving as vice-president of the Faith and Order Commission. He is also a member of the WCC’s policy-making Central Committee. Principal of the Bangalore college, he also teaches systematic theology and Christian ethics. - Text transcribed from caption: P-32226 TWO-WAY PHONES CONNECT FUND DINNERS NEW YORK -- Dr. Franklin Clark Fry, president of the Lutheran Church in America, makes telephone contact with one of nine simultaneous dinners held in as many cities to open an $8 million fund campaign for relocation of the Lutheran Theological Seminary in downtown Philadelphia. Dr. Fry and Dr. Donald R. Heiges (center), president of the seminary, addressed the nine dinners from New York via the phone hookup. At right is Dr. Gunnar Knudsen of Reading, Pa., chairman of the board for the seminary. The board voted early in February to relocate the seminary, now in the Mt. - Description
- Children of the East Harlem neighborhood gather about Rev. Don Benedict (standing right near center door) and Rev. J. Archie Hargraves (extreme right), co-pastors, as they, accompanied by two field workers from the Union Theological Seminary, are about to enter the new East Harlem Protestant Parish. The new "storefront church" is the first unit opened under the sponsorship of the four Protestant denominations: New York City Society of the Methodist Church, Baptist City Society, New York City Congregational Christian Church Association and the Presbytery of New York. Its work will be conducted under the supervision of the New York City Mission Society, with the Union Theological Seminary's field department providing pastors and part-time workers.

William O’Connor, of St. Joseph’s Seminary, Yonkers, N.Y., is shown addressing the inaugural meeting here of the Catholic Theological Society of America -- first group of its kind in this country. The society is intended to promote theological discussion and research and will also seek “to relate the theology of the Church to current problems.” Inauguration of the society, of which Father O’Connor was elected a director, was preceded by a Pontifical Mass in St. Patrick’s Cathedral presided over by Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York. - Text transcribed from caption: C-30414 FATHER WEIGEL, FAMED THEOLOGIAN, DIES AT 57 NEW YORK -- Father Gustave Weigel, S.J., famed U.S. Roman Catholic theologian and ecumenical leader, died Jan. 3 at the age of 57. A member of the Vatican Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity, Father Weigel was noted for his friendships and contacts with Protestant and Orthodox. Here the priest is shown in familiar settings. At top, he is shown at Alexandria, Va., where 20 Protest-ant churches and the city’s largest Catholic church joined in 1962 in a program of prayer for Christian Unity. With Father Weigel (third from left) were, left to right, Suffragan Bishop Samuel B. Chilton of the Protestant Episcopal Diocese of Virginia; the Rev. William Basom of Beverly Hills Community church; and the Rev. Charles Bayer, pastor of First Christian Church. Below, Father Weigel is shown in Rome where he assisted American journalists at daily press conferences arranged for newsmen at the Second Vatican Council.
