- Msgr. Ellis resigns Catholic U. post.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30469 MSGR. ELLIS RESIGNS CATHOLIC U. POST WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Msgr. John Tracy Ellis, noted Catholic scholar, resigned as church history professor at the Catholic University of America after 30 years as student and faculty member. He will assume the same teaching post at the University of San Francisco. A teacher at Catholic University, only Pontifical university in this country, for 28 years, Msgr. Ellis had been church history professor there since 1947. He has been on leave from Catholic University for some months and has been residing there. The priest holds worldwide recognition as a church historian and for encouraging Catholics to deepen and broaden their intellectual life. Last year, Msgr. Ellis charged that Catholic University had been undergoing a “type of suppression” for nearly a decade. He made the comment at a time when the names of four noted theologians were withdrawn by university officials from a list of proposed speakers suggested by a student group.
