VATICAN CITY -- Concelebrants of the Latin Rite Mass in St. Peter's Basilica opening the Vatican Council's third session partake of the consecrated wine with a spoon from the chalice, as Pope Paul VI stands by praying. The pontiff alone drank the wine directly from the chalice. In addition to the Pope, 24 prelates concelebrated the Mass. These included three cardinals, 15 archbishops -- two of whom were Africans; four bishops and two heads of religious orders. The service marked the first time on record that a Latin Rite Mass was ever concelebrated in the huge basilica. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (KEY-9C-64-NAB)

- Deportation hearing for Maryknoll priest.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-45863 DEPORTATION HEARING FOR MARYKNOLL PRIEST MARYKNOLL, N.Y. -- Father Edward M. Gerlock, M.M. (right, top photo) a Maryknoll missionary from Binghampton, N.Y., appears at a deportation hearing in the Philippines with his chief counsel, Lorenzo M. Tanada, a former Senator in the Philippine National Congress. Below, documents are marked during the hearings as spectators look on. At the table, from left to right, are: Mr. Tanada, Father Gerlock, a deportation board clerk and a Philippine National Constabulary officer called as a witness. Maryknoll Bishop Joseph W. Regan, M.M., of Tagum stands at far right. Father Gerlock, arrested by the government at Tagum on the island of Mindanao last October, is still awaiting a ruling by the deportation board although the hearing on his case began in December 1973. Charged with being critical of Filipino martial law, he is free to “come and go” within the city of Manila but is still in a kind of “limbo” so far as his future is concerned. One of three Maryknollers arrested in October 1973 and slated for deportation, the veteran of 12 years’ service in the Philippines decided to plead “not guilty” to charges and demand a hearing. This summer Maryknoll priests and nuns are being taught the language under the direction of Father George F. Pfister, M.M. (right), director of the order’s Swahili School.
