- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30655 SEMINARY FIGHTS VOLCANIC ASH SAN JOSE, Costa Rica -- The Latin American Biblical Seminary in San Jose has had a sizeable cleanup problem for the past year in removing volcanic ash from its roof and other parts of the building. The ash falls on the city at intervals from the Irazu volcano about 15 miles away. A seminary worker is shown clearing away some of the fallout from a roof gutter -- a job that must be done regularly. Officials of the seminary, sponsored by the Latin American Mission of San Jose, say the ash is not a menace, but a perennial nuisance. The Seminary prepares Christian workers for Spanish-speaking nations. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (LAM-2D-64-NAB)

- Rustic cross attracts lakeside worshippers.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-31411 RUSTIC CROSS ATTRACTS LAKESIDE WORSHIPPERS JACKSON, Wyo. -- Lovely Jackson Lake and the soaring peaks of the Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming provide a beautiful wilderness setting for worshipping vacationers. Minutes before this photo was taken, Donald Scaar, student minister in his second year at Duke Divinity School, Durham, N.C., had placed his rustic cross at the water's edge. Soon worshippers from the nearby campground arrived for the scheduled Sunday service. To be ordained as a minister of the Reformed Church of America, Mr. Scaar is one of some 200 college and seminary students participating in the National Council of Churches' Ministry in the National Parks. Over one million vacationers in 36 parks are served in the summer phase of the program and many more will take advantage of year-round and special winter ministries in nine parks. - Description
- Text transcribed from captions on reverse: The heavily damaged Dom, Berlin’s Protestant Cathedral, where the Kaisers attended divine worship before World War I. This church was vandalized for 8 days following the occupation of Berlin. Most of the tombs of former German emperors and princes desecrated. At the right can be seen the towering St. Mary’s Church, one of the oldest sanctuaries in Brandenburg Provinces, and one of the mostly lightly [sic] damaged of the Berlin churches. Provost Heinrich Grueber, who is Protestant Counsellor in the Berlin City Government, is pastor of St. Mary’s. Domprediger Dr. ____Doehring standing amid the ruins of the Dom, Berlin’s Protestant Cathedral. Dr. Doehring, who is still active in German church affairs, was the Kaisers’ pastor before World War I. During the Nazi regime he resisted efforts of the Hitlerites to “Nazify” the Christian Church. Services of the Dom parish are now held in a hall, as are most of church services in Berlin.
