- Text transcribed from caption: P-31327 FIRST NEGRO SMITH COLLEGE CHAPLAIN NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- Dr. Benjamin J. Anderson, a United Presbyterian pastor at Princeton, N.J., since 1948 has been named Chaplain of Smith College at Northampton, Mass. Assuming the post after Labor Day, he will be the first Negro to serve in the post at the noted women’s school. Dr. Anderson has been active in both religious and civic circles, spearheading integration of his own congregation and working with neighborhood integration and human rights groups.
