- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30633 HOLY THURSDAY A bishop washes seminarians' feet at a Holy Thursday evening Mass in imitation of the humility of Christ who washed the feet of the 12 Apostles at the Last Supper. At right, parishioners receive Holy Communion during services in commemoration of the institution of the Holy Eucharist by Christ. - Good Friday.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30634 GOOD FRIDAY Most mournful day in the Christian calendar, Good Friday marks the Passion and Death of Christ. On that day the Crucifix is brought to the sanctuary in procession for veneration by the faithful. At the service, the bishop chants three times: "Behold the wood of the Cross; on it hung the Savior of the world." And the faithful reply each time: "Come, let us adore." Liturgical rites include the reading of the Passion according to St. John and the offering of prayers for the Church and people. This is the only day of the year on which Mass is not offered in the Latin Rite. However, the faithful may receive Holy Communion. - Holy Saturday.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30635 HOLY SATURDAY Easter Vigil rites on Holy Saturday are highlighted by the blessing and lighting of the New Fire and the Paschal Candle, symbols of the Resurrection. Here a bishop cuts a cross into the candle before it is lit--symbolizing that the cross is no longer a standard of shame but one of victory. The lighted candle burns on the altar during every Mass from Holy Saturday until Ascension Thursday. The rites of the Easter Vigil also included the blessing of water at the baptismal font, the renewal of the baptismal vows of the faithful, and the reading of the prophesies.
