- Msgr. Ellis resigns Catholic U. post.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30469 MSGR. ELLIS RESIGNS CATHOLIC U. POST WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Msgr. John Tracy Ellis, noted Catholic scholar, resigned as church history professor at the Catholic University of America after 30 years as student and faculty member. He will assume the same teaching post at the University of San Francisco. A teacher at Catholic University, only Pontifical university in this country, for 28 years, Msgr. Ellis had been church history professor there since 1947. He has been on leave from Catholic University for some months and has been residing there. The priest holds worldwide recognition as a church historian and for encouraging Catholics to deepen and broaden their intellectual life. Last year, Msgr. Ellis charged that Catholic University had been undergoing a “type of suppression” for nearly a decade. He made the comment at a time when the names of four noted theologians were withdrawn by university officials from a list of proposed speakers suggested by a student group. Bottoms, the first black person ever to be moderator of the 900,000 member Presbyterian Church in the U.S. (Southern). Dr. Bottoms, 66, the pastor of the predominantly white Oakhurst Presbyterian Church in Decatur, Ga., won a first-ballot victory at the denomination's 114th General Assembly in Louisville to succeed Dr. Kraemer as moderator. An excerpt from his prayer: “Hold us, we pray, and the people of America, calm and steady and full of faith for the Republic in this tragic hour of our history. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-45707 PASSING THE GAVEL LOUISVILLE -- Dr. Charles E.S. Kraemer (right) hands over the moderator’s gavel to Dr. Lawrence W. Bottoms, the first black person ever to be elected moderator of the 900,000-member Presbyterian Church in the U.S. (Southern). Dr. Bottoms, 66, the pastor of the predominantly white Oakhurst Presbyterian Church in Decatur, Ga., won a first-ballot victory at the denomination’s 114th General Assembly in Louisville to succeed Dr. Kraemer as moderator. Dr. Bottoms had already set two other precedents in the 113-year-old PCUS, when he served as the first black moderator of the Louisville Presbytery and the first black moderator of any PCUS synod (Kentucky) -- both in 1963.
