- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30300 BAPTISTRY TO HOUSE CALVARY ROCK BILOXI, Miss. -- The new $440,000 St. Michael’s church under construction in Biloxi, Miss., follows a trend of placing renewed emphasis on the baptistry. At left, laborers work on the church’s baptistry, a separate building similar in shape to the baptistry. At right Father H.J. Mullin, pastor of St. Michael’s, looks on as the five-and-a-half-ton chunk of Mount Calvary is uncovered by Dr. W.S. Sekul (left) and Steve Marinovich. The two men had been instrumental in getting the rock from Israel to the U.S. The rock will be trimmed a little and a basin carved in the top. Otherwise, it will be left as it is. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30469 MSGR. ELLIS RESIGNS CATHOLIC U. POST WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Msgr. John Tracy Ellis, noted Catholic scholar, resigned as church history professor at the Catholic University of America after 30 years as student and faculty member. He will assume the same teaching post at the University of San Francisco. A teacher at Catholic University, only Pontifical university in this country, for 28 years, Msgr. Ellis had been church history professor there since 1947. He has been on leave from Catholic University for some months and has been residing there. The priest holds worldwide recognition as a church historian and for encouraging Catholics to deepen and broaden their intellectual life. Last year, Msgr. Ellis charged that Catholic University had been undergoing a “type of suppression” for nearly a decade. He made the comment at a time when the names of four noted theologians were withdrawn by university officials from a list of proposed speakers suggested by a student group. Father Dean, the first black Tennessean to become a Catholic priest, was brought up as a Baptist and attended the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, affiliated with the National Baptist Convention, U.S.A., Inc. with his parents until he was 12, when he made the decision to become a Catholic. Mrs. Dean said that she and her husband had no objection to their son’s becoming a priest. “The whole family attended his ordination service, along with almost all the congregation of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.” She said her son first expressed an interest in the Catholic Church at the age of four. He attended St. Vincent de Paul School, in the parish he now serves as assistant pastor, from the second grade on and was baptized a Catholic at age 13. Wilson, port chaplain of the Cleveland Catholic diocese, offers a memorial Mass for two stevedores killed in accidents here during the past year. The altar was set up on a fork-lift crane inside a chilly warehouse. Dock workers and company officials assisted at the Mass, the first ever offered on Cleveland’s waterfront. A special prayer, composed by Father Wilson, was distributed in memory of the dead workers. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (RF-CLE-12B-63-RB)

He takes judo lessons. At six feet two and 235 pounds, it’s not, as Father Streb explains it, for protection. “I’m interested in it mainly as a sport,” said the assistant past of St. Charles Borromeo Church in Elmira Heights, N.Y., “I thought it would be a challenge. It is.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (SM-ROC-8B-74-DS)

- Ordination of a priest.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: ORDINATION OF A PRIEST #1509 At the offertory each ordinand presents a lighted candle to the bishop. From then on they all say prayers of Mass aloud with the bishop. Shown kneeling besides them are their sponsors, wearing white surplices. After his communion, each new priest takes a draught of wine. Later the priests recite “Apostles’ Creed” together, and Bishop again lays on his hands and says, “Receive the Holy Ghost. Whose sins you shall forgive they are forgiven them; whose sins you shall retain, they are retained.” At this point each priest makes a promise of obedience, and the bishop solemnly blesses them all together.
