- Uncanonical ordinations.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: Suggested for use with RNS WEEK IN RELIGION for release Aug. 9, 1974 PC-45860 UNCANONICAL ORDINATIONS PHILADELPHIA -- Four Episcopal bishops ordained 11 women deacons to the priesthood in an uncanonical ceremony in Philadelphia’s Church of the Advocate (July 29). Although there is no Episcopal canon that specifically prohibits the ordination of women to the priesthood, the canons specifically state that “No deacon shall be ordained priest unless he be first recommended by the standing committee of the diocese to which he belongs.” None of the 11 women had received such a recommendation. These youngsters, white and Negro, learn together, with Rector Thomas Logan getting a big smile out of all of them. Mr. Logan, formerly at St. Michael’s and All Angels Church, has raised Calvary from chapel status to that of an independent church. His present congregation is 90 per cent Negro, ten per cent white. Calvary formerly was predominantly white, but a population shift cut its weekly Sunday attendance to about 25. It then was merged with St. Michael’s and All Angels Church, with Mr. Logan moving his congregation to Calvary in September 1945. Average Sunday attendance now is 250. Father Gabrial Rea, C.M., of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, baptized the children. The girls, who were taken home to the Dominican Republic several days after the baptism, were given conditional baptism when they were born in August 1973, as they were not expected to survive. The ceremony in the chapel of Children’s Hospital was witnessed by the 23 members of the surgical team that separated the twins. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (B-PHI-12A-74-DS)
