Leaders present included (left to right): Canon Burgess Carr, general secretary of the All-Africa Conference of Churches; Father John Meyendorff, chairman of the Commission and a theologian of the Orthodox Church in America; Col. I.K. Acheampong, Ghana’s head of state and a Roman Catholic layman; Dr. Lukas Vischer, director of the WCC Faith and Order Secretariat, and Dr. J. Robert Nelson, chairman of the Faith and Order Working Committee and dean of the Boston University School of Theology. The Faith and Order Commission, which includes Roman Catholic members as well as representatives from the Council’s Protestant and Orthodox communion, is a major component of the international ecumenical movement. - Text transcribed from caption: PC-31860 SLAIN PROTESTANT MISSIONARY AND HIS FAMILY LEOPOLDVILLE -- The Rev. Joseph W. Tucker of Portland, Ore., an Assemblies of God missionary, was reported to have been the first white hostage executed by fleeing Congo rebels at Paulis prior to its capture by Belgian paratroops. Mr. Tucker, a Congo missionary since 1939, is shown here with his wife and their three children who were rescued and evacuated to Leopoldville. The Tucker children are Johnny, an 18-year-old adopted son, Carol Lynne, 13, and Melvin Paul, 11. - Text transcribed from caption: P-31039 TANGANYIKA CHURCHMAN CONSECRATED AS BISHOP MOSHI, Tanganyika -- The Rev. Stephano R. Moshi was consecrated as bishop of the Northern Diocese of the newly-constituted Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanganyika, formed last year through the merger of seven Churches. Bishop Hanns Lilje of the Lutheran Church of Hanover, Germany, a past president of the Lutheran World Federation, presided at the colorful services at Moshi, Tanganyika. Bishop Moshi, 58, is presiding officer of the new 400,000-member Church and his diocese has some 160,000 members. LAGOS, NIGERIA -- Queen Elizabeth II leaves the Cathedral Church of Christ here after attending a service of commemoration for members of the Royal West African Frontier Force who died during World War II. With her are the Most Rev. James L. C. Horstead, Anglican Archbishop of West Africa; and his chaplain who is holding the Primatial Cross of the Province of West Africa. The sermon was preached by Dr. A. W. Howells, Bishop of Lagos; and the lesson read by the Duke of Edinburgh, who accompanied his wife on her visit. Visser ‘t Hooft, general secretary of the international Protestant-Anglican-Orthodox organization since it was formed in 1948.
