- Text transcribed from caption: C-32210 FIRST ENGLISH MASS IN CHILE SANTIAGO -- Chaplain (Brig. Gen.) Edwin R. Chess of the U.S. Air Force celebrated the first “English” Mass in Chile. The Mass was said at the Maryknoll Fathers Centerhouse for the English-speaking community in Santiago. Father Thomas F. McDermott, M.M., conducts the singing, while a chaplain (in lieutenant colonel’s uniform) serves as “altar boy.” In the front pew is U.S. Ambassador to Chile, Ralph Dungan, with three of his six children.
