AUCKLAND, N.Z. -- Queen Elizabeth II attended a worship service in the Cathedral Church of St. Mary here during her tour of the British Commonwealth Nations. - 200-year-old communion set.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-31873 200-YEAR-OLD COMMUNION SET AUCKLAND, N.Z. -- The Rev. Robert E. Marsden, Anglican minister in Cornwall, England, holds a 200-year-old Communion set which he brought with him on a 12,000-mile journey to remote Oihi Bay, in the Bay of Islands, north of Auckland. The set belonged to the clergyman’s great-great-grandfather, the Rev. Samuel Marsden who, on Christmas Day 1814, became the first missionary to preach the Gospel to the Maoris of New Zealand. On Christmas Day, Mr. Marsden also will conduct a service at Oihi Bay and will use the same Communion set. The rite will mark the 150th anniversary of the pioneer missionary’s first service.
