The oval discs of pure wax are stamped on one side with the impression of a lamb to symbolize Jesus and on the other with the papal coat-of-arms. They are solemnly blessed by Popes at intervals of seven years. The sacramentals are intended as protection against Satan, sickness, sudden death, temptation or tempests and as a medium of divine help for expectant mothers. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: CEPO-31580 'THIS IS MY BLOOD...' VATICAN CITY -- Concelebrants of the Latin Rite Mass in St. Peter's Basilica opening the Vatican Council's third session partake of the consecrated wine with a spoon from the chalice, as Pope Paul VI stands by praying. The pontiff alone drank the wine directly from the chalice. In addition to the Pope, 24 prelates concelebrated the Mass. These included three cardinals, 15 archbishops -- two of whom were Africans; four bishops and two heads of religious orders. The service marked the first time on record that a Latin Rite Mass was ever concelebrated in the huge basilica. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (KEY-9C-64-NAB)
