- Religion on the move.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: RELIGION ON THE MOVE #3167 Shifting populations throughout the United States and Canada during the war years have made churchmen transportation conscious, and as a result they have turned to many different conveyances to bring God’s word to their flocks. This sea-going parson is the Rev. A. H. Marshall, of St. Phillips Protestant Episcopal church, Southport, N.C. He is preaching from the deck of his boat to one of the 105 congregations scattered over hundreds of miles of inland waterway between the Virginia and South Carolina state lines. In bad weather the “congregation” adjourns to a nearby building, or, if the group is small enough, the cabin of the boat serves as a meeting place. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-45897 PRESIDENT FORD AT CHURCH ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- President Gerald Ford chats with the Rev. William L. Dols, Jr., rector of Immanuel Church-on-the-Hill, and the Rev. Patricia Park, assistant rector, after attending services at the Alexandria, Va., Episcopal church two days after he was sworn in as the natin’s 38th Chief Executive. Mr. Ford was accompanied by his wife, Betty, and their 17-year-old daughter, Susan, as they attended the church, where they have been worshipping since 1955. They heard a special prayer for the new President, a prayer for former President Richard M. Nixon and his family, and a sermon in which the rector called for “picking u the broken pieces” and awakening like Lazarus of the New Testament story to “a new day filled with other possibilities.” The liturgy was conducted by Mrs. Park, who is a deacon and the wife of an Episcopal priest. She also read the prayers for the new President and for the Nixons. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (A-WAS-8C-74-DS)

The Rev. Carter Heyward of New York (left) and the Rev. Allison Cheek of Annandale, Va., are joined by the Rev. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-45927 RESIGNS IN PROTEST SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Mrs. Betty Bone Schiess, one of the 11 women deacons who took part in the controversial Episcopal ordination ceremony in Philadelphia on July 29, talks with Dr. Charles V. Willie after he announced his resignation as vice-chairman of the Episcopal Church’s House of Deputies. Dr. Willie’s son, James, clings to his father’s back. In a sermon at Grace Episcopal Church in Syracuse, the black layman, who took the action to protest the ruling of the Church’s House of Bishops declaring the women’s ordinations to be invalid, said that “to carry out the unjust laws of this Church which do not affirm the right of females to be priests and bishops is to visit oppression upon women.” In addition to his resignation from the House of Deputies post, Dr. Willie, a sociologist who had preached the sermon at the ordination service, said he is also resigning from the Church’s Executive Council. - Uncanonical ordinations.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: Suggested for use with RNS WEEK IN RELIGION for release Aug. 9, 1974 PC-45860 UNCANONICAL ORDINATIONS PHILADELPHIA -- Four Episcopal bishops ordained 11 women deacons to the priesthood in an uncanonical ceremony in Philadelphia’s Church of the Advocate (July 29). Although there is no Episcopal canon that specifically prohibits the ordination of women to the priesthood, the canons specifically state that “No deacon shall be ordained priest unless he be first recommended by the standing committee of the diocese to which he belongs.” None of the 11 women had received such a recommendation. - Rule women's ordinations invalid.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-45918 RULE WOMEN’S ORDINATIONS INVALID CHICAGO -- Presiding Bishop John M. Allin (left) of the Episcopal Church conducts a Communion service during the emergency session of the denomination’s House of Bishops in Chicago, called to consider the recent ordinations of 11 women deacons to the priesthood. At right are two of the women ordained on July 29 in Philadelphia: the Revs. Allison Cheek of Virginia (standing) and Jeanette Piccard of Minnesota. By a large majority of those present and voting, the bishops ruled that the Philadelphia ceremony did not meet the necessary conditions for the ordination of deacons to the priesthood and declared the ordinations “not valid.” They referred the entire matter, including any disciplinary action to be taken against the participants, to the Church’s Fall 1976 General Convention. - Episcopal clergyman ends long civil rights fast.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-31012 EPISCOPAL CLERGYMAN ENDS LONG CIVIL RIGHTS FAST CHESTER, Pa. -- The Rev. Clayton K. Hewett, 30 pounds lighter after an 18-day hunger strike in protest to racial segregation in schools at Chester, Pa., smiles at the youngest of his six children. Six-month-old Maria Theresa is held by another daughter, Darrale Jeanne, 13. Mrs. Hewett is at right. The clergyman, with one arm in a sling, ended his fast after Pennsylvania Governor William Scranton launched an effort to solve the Chester school segregation problem. He was arrested on several charges during a protest demonstration and after 10 days in jail, the last three in “complete fast” without liquids, was hospitalized. For the last eight days he continued his protest, accepting only juice and vitamins. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-NY-5C-64-NBM)
