Collins of Toronto, minister of the Fairfield United church, Hamilton, has been appointed assistant minister of the Colborne Street United church, London, Ont., which has a large congregation. She is one of the few women ministers of the United Church of Canada to be named to town or city churches. - Text transcribed from caption: P-30434 STUDENTS CONCERNED WITH RACE, CHURCH MISSION ATHENS, Ohio -- Civil rights and the church’s mission were major concerns of 3,000 Protestant and Orthodox youths at the 19th Quadrennial Ecumenical Student Conference at Ohio University. Left photo shows two leaders at a session on the race question. They are Clarence Mitchell, director of the NAACP’s Washington office (foreground); and Dr. Robert W. Spike, executive director of the National Council of Churches’ Commission on Religion and Race. In right photo is the Very Rev. Alexander Schmemann, dean and chaplain of St. Vladimir’s Russian Orthodox Theological Seminary, Crestwood, N.Y., who gave a series of lectures on the “Christian Mission for the Life of the World,” the conference’s main theme. This sea-going parson is the Rev. A. H. Marshall, of St. Phillips Protestant Episcopal church, Southport, N.C. He is preaching from the deck of his boat to one of the 105 congregations scattered over hundreds of miles of inland waterway between the Virginia and South Carolina state lines. In bad weather the “congregation” adjourns to a nearby building, or, if the group is small enough, the cabin of the boat serves as a meeting place. The Rev. Gilbert Thompson, of Moose Factory, Ont., uses dogs and snowshoes to reach his congregation. He ministers to both whites and Cree Indians, the latter in their own tongue. They in turn translate his message into Eskimo for any of that race present. Mr. Thompson prefers travel by boat in the summer to dogs or snowshoes in winter. He retires in September from the wardenship of Bermondsey Settlement (Methodist), which he helped to found 60 years ago. In the course of a long life spent in religious, social and educational work, Dr. Lidgett has been vice-chancellor of London University and a leader of the London County Council.
