Cap., pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Yonkers, N.Y., surveys the goings on at the construction site of the Father Finian Sullivan Tower, a low-rent high rise building for the elderly. When completed in 1975, the 13-story apartment building will be the first state-aided non-profit housing development for the elderly in Yonkers and the first housing project of its kind in the New York archdiocese to be successfully sponsored by a church group. The building, which will contain 150 3 1/2 -room united with rentals averaging $41 a room, is being sponsored by the Sacred heart Senior Citizens Corporation, a group of laymen and priests who have been pushing with dogged persistence for nearly five years to make the senior citizens residence a reality. Msgr. Donaldson has been involved in the project since becoming pastor at Sacred Heart nearly five years ago. The tower is named for his predecessor, who initiated the project but did not live to see it become a reality. Although the building is not scheduled for completion until November 1975, there is already a waiting list of 400 people wishing apartments, and one must be over 62 and have a fixed income of less than $10,000 a year to apply. The Negro civil rights leader is shown here at a press conference with representatives of the National Association for Puerto Rican Civil Rights -- Gilberto G. Valentina and Irma V. Santaella. The boycott planners declared that a School Board plan for integration was inadequate and that the demonstration would be held. - The Fellowship of Presbyterians.
- Description
- In 1989, the Covenant Fellowship of Presbyterians and Presbyterians United for Biblical Concerns merged to form Presbyterians for Renewal (PFR)--a broad based advocacy and ministry organization. In 2011, a movement began that would come to be known as the Fellowship of Presbyterians--reclaiming a covenanted biblical community within the PC(USA) where unity is derived from a clearly articulated theology, where the common mission is making disciples of Jesus Christ, and where new generations of leaders could be nurtured to speak the gospel into a rapidly-changing world. In 2014, these two organizations blended the best of their ministries together to form The Fellowship Community.
