- Title
- "Show business chapel."
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-46620 ‘SHOW BUSINESS CHAPEL’ NEW YORK -- For Austin Miles, the term “show business chapel” has two meanings. It is the title of a series of 100 “spots” that the 40-year-old Assemblies of God minister has recorded in Detroit for national distribution through Video Associates, Inc. And it is also a description of the portable worship center that he takes with him on his travels as announcer for the Royal Lipizzan Stallion Show, “The Wonderful World of Horses.” As the first international show business chaplain of the Assemblies of God, Mr. Miles has brought a Christian witness to the horse show, as he had done earlier for several circuses he had served as ringmaster. “Show business people are no different from any other people in their basic needs,” he points out. “They’ve got problems, face temptations, have tough schedules. Even a glamorous performer needs assurance of the love of God.” Here, Mr. Miles (right) chats with G. Edward Nelson Jr. of the American Bible Society in the portable chapel he has set up in a Madison Square Garden dressing room. - Honorably retired.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: HONORABLY RETIRED #1787 NEW YORK -- Almost a tradition in itself is this old bell standing outside the rectory of St. George’s Protestant Episcopal church here. Made in England, it cost 250 pounds sterling and was presented to the church by Thomas H. Smith in 1818. For many years it hung in the old church in Beekman Street and afterward in the chapel at 14th Street. In 1905 it was removed to its present site after it was reported that it had been cracked by improper ringing. Once asked by the city Fire Department if the bell could be rung in case of fire, the vestry called attention to a by-law of the church directing the sexton “to have the bell rung at all alarms of fire.” Shown inspecting the bell is the rector of St. George’s, the Rev. Elmore M. McKee. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BH-NY-MES-3C-6-O-A-E)

Sun Myung Moon delivers a sermon on “The New Future of Christianity” to an overflow crowd of more than 20,000 at New York’s Madison Square Garden. The Korean preacher’s appearance at the famed arena followed a “media blitz” which saw poster pasted up all over the city, frequent TV commercials and hundreds of Mr. Moon’s followers on street corners handing out leaflets and free tickets to the rally. Although the Garden was standing-room-only at the start of the program, people began leaving by the hundreds after listening to 20 minutes of Mr. Moon’s fiery rhetoric. By the end of the sermon more than half of the audience had walked out. During his two and one-half hour discourse, Mr. Moon claimed to have “direct revelations from God” and declared that “the messiah” will come soon and establish the “physical kingdom of God on earth.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (CS-NY-9C-74-DS)

Sun Myung Moon as he makes his much publicized appearance at New York’s Madison Square Garden. The Korean preacher, founder of the Unification Church, declared time and again during his two and one-half hour discourse that “the messiah” will come soon and establish the “physical kingdom of God on earth.” This new messiah will be the same one that Christians believe came in Jesus Christ, the evangelist asserted, making veiled references to “new revelations” concerning the messiah.
