- Urges greater food production.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31441 URGES GREATER FOOD PRODUCTION NEW YORK -- Abbe Francois Houtart, Belgian's leading expert on population and food problems, holds that the answer to population growth is acceleration of nature's productivity rather than birth control. In a press interview in New York, the Belgian priest hit two "fallacies" in modern thought -- that the world population will continue to increase indefinitely and that the earth cannot feed its population. Abbe Houtart's views, written in collaboration with a French rural economy specialist and a Dutch expert on religious and social research, will be published in a book, Population and Food, to be published by Sheed and Ward in November. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31557 200,000 AT GERMAN CATHOLIC CONGRESS STUTTGART, Germany -- Concelebration of an out-door Latin Rite Mass -- the first in Germany--marked the opening of the 80th German Catholic Day Congress (Katholikentag) in Stuttgart. Top photo shows Jozef Cardinal Frings, Archbishop of Cologne, and 20 priests with whom he concelebrated the Mass. Photo below shows the closing rally in which 200,000 persons gathered in a demonstration of religious unity. The rally featured a Bible-centered "Word of God" service. To emphasize Scripture as a "pillar of fair," a Bible was placed on an elevated platform, flanked by a huge Crucifix. Prayers were said not only for the Church but for all non-Catholic Christians. Another Mass also was concelebrated on the closing day by Archbishop Corrado Bafile, Papal Nuncio to Germany, and 20 other clergy. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (KV-BER-9B-64-NAB)

- Three nuns teaching future priests.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31639 THREE NUNS TEACHING FUTURE PRIESTS BATON ROUGE, La. -- These nuns are on the teaching staff of St. Joseph Cathedral Prep School (day seminary) in Baton Rouge, La., which until their appointment had been an all-male school. Shown trying out foreign language laboratory equipment are Sister Mary Peter (left), and Mother Rosario Arocena. Looking on is Sister Jane Louise, who, with Sister Peter, is a member of the Order of St. Joseph of Bourg. Mother Arocena belongs to the Daughters of Jesus. The nuns attribute their participation in the formation of priests to the "updating" of the role of Sisters in keeping with the changing status of women. Msgr. William D. Borders, the seminary's rector, said the nuns "will bring to the school feminine insight and the softening affective phases most lacking in all-male schools." - Famed cathedral to be state museum.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31136 FAMED CATHEDRAL TO BE STATE MUSEUM CARTHAGE, Tunisia -- Two views of the famed Cathedral at Carthage which has been turned over to the Tunisian government for use as a state museum. The last Mass at the 68-year-old cathedral was celebrated in early June. Attending were 21 seminarians from the White Fathers’ seminary at Carthage; the seminary can be seen behind the cathedral in the picture below. Under an agreement between the Vatican and Tunisia’s government many church properties will be turned over to the state because of “reduced need.” Independence of Tunisia from France was followed by a major exodus of Europeans, with French, Spaniards and Italians returning to their homelands. Consequently, the country’s Catholic population of more than 300,000 dropped to some 40,000 within a short time. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (PF-WN-6B-64-W)

- Religion on the move.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: RELIGION ON THE MOVE #3170 Shifting populations throughout the United States and Canada during the war years have made churchmen transportation conscious, and as a result they have turned to many different conveyances to bring God’s word to their flocks. Evangelist L. C. Robie of Union Springs, N.Y. (above) uses a plane to spread the gospel. Lettering on plane reads “Robie Gospel Ship--With a Message Higher Than He Can Fly--Jesus Saves.” He has been a travelling evangelist for 26 years.
