- Methodist Church congregation introduces novel way of raising post-war funds for missionaries.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: #28 METHODIST CHURCH CONGREGATION INTRODUCES NOVEL WAY OF RAISING POST-WAR FUNDS FOR MISSIONARIES Alton, Ill...The congregation of the First Methodist Church of this city, in its effort to raise money for the "Crusade for Christ," a Methodist movement to provide post-war funds for missionaries to re-enter foreign fields, has rolled up its sleeves, slipped into aprons and gone into the toy manufacturing business in the basement of the church. The work of turning out the toys is speeded up by applying "assembly line" methods. All the tools used are loaned by members of the "Young Married Couple" class. Lumber and paint were purchased in quantity, and as this series of exclusive photos shows, everyone is having a wonderful time in this novel fund-raising movement. - October 2020, during the coronavirus pandemic, this project was launched to tell the story of Richard’s resilience and of the family’s efforts to ease the psychic impact of his isolation during lockdown in a senior living residence. - Chaplain to refugees.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-29907 CHAPLAIN TO REFUGEES MACAO -- Refugees from Communist China can count on Spanish-born Father Luis Ruiz, S.J., to help them when they arrive in the Portuguese enclave of Macao. Known as “The chaplain to the refugees,” the Jesuit maintains a villa called Casa Ricci where his door is always open to those in need. He talks here with an old Chinese woman who came to him for funds to start a fruit business. Called “Lui Sam Fu” by the refugees, Father Ruiz was a missionary in China before the Reds took over. Since 1951 he has aided thousands of refugees from behind the “Bamboo Curtain.” Last year 10,801 persons registered at Casa Ricci. The exodus to Macao will continue, Father Ruiz says, “as long as people do not find more food and liberty in Red China.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (U-NY-9C-63-RB)

This summer Maryknoll priests and nuns are being taught the language under the direction of Father George F. Pfister, M.M. (right), director of the order’s Swahili School. - Episcopal Bishop of Liberia.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: EPISCOPAL BISHOP OF LIBERIA #1797 NEW YORK -- The Rt. Rev. Bravid W. Harris, bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church’s Missionary District of Liberia, West Africa, (shown above) conferred here with Presiding Bishop Henry St. George Tucker at Church headquarters. The Episcopal Church has 3,052 communicants and about 2,500 church school pupils and numerically it is the largest church in Liberia. Bishop Harris, whose control extends over 57 churches and mission stations, said he was fortunate to visit the establishments even twice a year, owing to transportation difficulties in the 45,000 sq. mile country. “Along the coast I travel by surf-boat, a kind of sailing vessel which, of course, depends on the winds. It takes three days at best to travel 60 miles,” he said. “Travel to the interior, by river, is accomplished by dug-out canoe.” The Bishop went to West Africa last October. A native of Warrenton, N.C., he was rector of the Grace Episcopal Church, Norfolk, Va., for 19 years when he joined the Church’s National Council here as educational secretary for its Negro work. He plans to return to Liberia in two months. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BH-NY-JOG-2C-6-A-E)
